If it feels like it’s been years since we last hung out with the inquisitive, sex-positive students at Moordale Secondary, that’s because it literally has been. When we last saw “Sex Education’s” Otis (Asa Butterfield), Russia had not yet invaded Ukraine and Aaron Rodgers was in the midst of an MVP-caliber season with the Green Bay Packers. “Barbie,” which seemingly featured half the cast of the British series, including Ncuti Gatwa and Emma Mackey, hadn’t yet begun filming. What I am trying to say is, it’s been a long time. But the critically acclaimed Netflix dramedy is better than ever in its fourth and final season.
The eight-episode swan song, which is now streaming, picks up in the aftermath of Moordale’s closure at the end of Season 3 and finds Otis, Eric (Gatwa) and several of their classmates attempting to find their bearings at a shockingly progressive new school, which, much to Otis’ dismay, already has a sex therapist of its own. Meanwhile, across the pond, Maeve (Mackey) is settling into her program in the U.S., where she’s taking classes with a popular author (Emmy winner Dan Levy) and attempting to maintain a long-distance relationship with Otis.
With emotions running high and yet another excellent performance from Emmy winner Gillian Anderson as Otis’ mother Jean, a popular sex therapist who finds herself overwhelmed by single motherhood, “Sex Education” is the awards contender to watch this weekend.
However, if you’re not up for dealing with all those hormones, other contenders to watch include:
- “American Horror Story: Delicate”: Here we go again! The latest installment of Ryan Murphy’s Emmy-winning FX anthology has arrived just in time for Halloween. The new season is split in half, with five episodes airing this fall and the rest arriving in 2024. The story is based on the book “Delicate Condition,” which follows an up-and-coming actress who believes a sinister force is interfering with her pregnancy. Matt Czuchry and Kim Kardashian join franchise regulars Emma Roberts, Billie Lourd and Denis O’Hare for what is sure to be a thriller. The season premiere is now streaming on Hulu.
- “Young Love”: An extension of Matthew A. Cherry’s Oscar-winning short film “Hair Love,” this animated series is set in Chicago and tells the heartfelt story of African American millennials Stephen Love (Scott Mescudi, aka Kid Cudi) and Angela Young (Issa Rae) as they attempt to navigate the ups and downs of parenthood, marriage and their careers. Brooke Monroe Conaway voices their daughter, Zuri Young Love. The first four episodes are now streaming on Max.
- “Reservation Dogs”: FX’s critically acclaimed series is pulling out all the stops as it nears its conclusion, with Oscar nominee Ethan Hawke making a guest appearance as the estranged father of Devery Jacobs’ Elora in this week’s penultimate episode. Might an Emmy nomination follow? One can only hope. The episode is now streaming on Hulu.
