“I’ll die my sister’s brother”: Christopher Ciccone Was Called a Traitor and Hated by Fans For “Betraying” Madonna With His Book

When it comes to siblings in the limelight, few stories are as intriguing as Madonna and her younger brother Christopher Ciccone’s. Known for her trailblazing career and boundary-pushing music, the former’s personal life has often danced in the shadows of her public persona. But it was her brother, who accidentally threw the proverbial cat among the pigeons in 2008 with his controversial memoir, Life with My Sister Madonna.

This book, which painted an unfiltered portrait of the Queen of Pop, didn’t just spill the beans on Madonna’s life but also alleged infidelities during her marriage to Guy Ritchie. Recently, the heartbreaking news emerged that Ciccone, a multitalented artist, dancer, and designer, passed away at the age of 63.
Christopher Ciccone Faced Backlash for His Memoir on Madonna
The drama between Christopher Ciccone and Madonna has all the makings of a blockbuster film: sibling rivalry, fame, and a dash of scandal. And let’s not forget the cannonball that the former made when he released his memoir, Life With My Sister Madonna.
In his book, Ciccone quipped (via The Guardian), “I was born my mother’s son, but I will die my sister’s brother.” What a way to put it!
The memoir hit the shelves in 2008, and it didn’t exactly sit well with the Queen of Pop’s fans; who were already witnessing her juggle a particularly rocky year. That year was filled with its fair share of real-life drama, including navigating a divorce from Guy Ritchie—oh, and the whole sibling book debacle.

Ciccone told The Guardian:
2008? Well, she turned 50, there was the divorce with Guy, the stuff with her kids, and there was my book. All these things that she has no control over came crashing down at the same moment. And my sister is big on control.
In his tell-all, Ciccone even described how he and his sister were intertwined in both their personal and professional lives. Being two years younger, he wasn’t always in the limelight. Madonna even dedicated a song to him—“It was quite a nice moment,” he reflected. “But it was my sister’s way of publicly showing how kind she is to her family. It was calculated.”

When asked about the irony of writing a book to carve out his own identity only to find himself in Madonna’s shadow again, Ciccone chuckled.
She probably thinks of it as a desperate attempt for attention and money. And, ultimately, a betrayal. I think of it as a thesaurus—different ways of defining people and myself—and also as another piece of art.
It seems the release of the memoir stirred up quite an uproar among Madonna’s fans, who viewed Ciccone’s revelations as a serious breach of loyalty. The latter recounted a particularly amusing moment, saying:
The other day, I was walking through a gay bar and I heard this guy whisper, ‘Traitor!’ It was pretty funny.
The book strained their relationship, with Ciccone claiming that Madonna had him blacklisted from Hollywood (see Page Six).

Sadly, the curtain fell on Christopher Ciccone’s life at the age of 63, as he passed away in Michigan after a battle with cancer, surrounded by his husband, Ray Thacker, and loved ones. The former’s representative confirmed the news to Page Six.
Back in the day, Madonna and Ciccone shared a close-knit bond, especially during the whirlwind of her rise to fame in the 1980s. He started off as one of her backup dancers and soon became her backstage dresser and show designer.

However, their dynamic took a dramatic turn in 2008 when Ciccone released his autobiography, Life With My Sister Madonna, a revelation-filled account that stirred up quite a bit of controversy.

Over the years, the siblings managed to patch things up, but old wounds were quickly reopened during a 2017 interview with The Sun. Ciccone alleged that Madonna had blacklisted him in Hollywood, dubbing her “quite powerful” in the industry. He expressed disappointment, saying:
I could have written that book about how horrifying she is or can be, but I didn’t write that book.
Ciccone wasn’t shy about sharing his thoughts on Madonna’s performances post-1994 either, claiming they had lost their “theatricality” and connection with the audience. Well, his story will undoubtedly linger on in the annals of pop culture history.
