Bo Nix Impresses Broncos Owner With His ‘Poise & Maturity’ as Greg Penner Puts His Stock Behind Rookie QB
What could go wrong when a team owner decides to rally around a rookie quarterback? Well, that’s yet to be determined. However, Broncos CEO and Walmart Chairman, Greg Penner, has decided to support Bo Nix and all that comes with him. “I’ve got high expectations for what we can accomplish,” is what Penner thinks of his revamped Broncos.
The Denver football team recently did a column and from what we can see, this training camp, off-season trades, and the preseason games have put a big smile on the CEO’s face. So much so that he sees a “real sense of partnership” developing between him and the HC and the GM. But we’re interested in what he had to say about the starting quarterback, Bo Nix.
Bo Nix grew up the Denver Broncos’ CEO
“I’ve been really impressed with his poise and maturity,” Penner said of Nix. “That’s something about starting that many games in college that obviously develops that, and I think he’s got some incredible traits. It was great to see how he played in the first two preseason games.”

Nix spent 5 years in college honing his quarterback skills and Sean Payton was impressed when he laid his eyes on him. Nix started 61 games in his collegiate career, but his time at Oregon was the most eye-catching. In his two years at Oregon, Nix amassed 7,534 yards and 67 touchdowns. But most impressively, he took 9 sacks and threw just 9 interceptions in two seasons.
His performance during the preseason games was nothing short of praise either. He didn’t take a sack or throw any picks in the two preseason games he played either. Also, it’s worth noting that Nix and Courtland Sutton’s relationship is evolving by the day. A couple of training camp videos are enough proof to back that up. George Penner was there, and the experience left him awestruck. He even had a chat with Nix at some point in time.
“I had a chance to call him after Sean announced that he’d be the starting quarterback. I had a great conversation with him then. All rookies are going to go through some ups and downs in their first season, and I told him, ‘We’re going to support you,’” George Penner admitted.
Penner might not have been so invested in Nix before he came to the Broncos. However, things were different for HC Sean Payton and GM George Payton. Nix gave them all the reason to hire him.
How Sean Payton fell in love with the Oregon QB
The saga started in March when Sean Payton visited Oregon to see Bo Nix in action. The Athletic did a detailed column about the encounter. At one point, the HC turned to the GM and said, “This is the guy.” What prompted him to do that? Well, for one, Nix doesn’t have a vice. Instead, whatever he does boils down to becoming a better football player.

“‘I’m just waiting for a candy bar, some chewing tobacco, just one vice,’ Payton said. Instead, Nix pulled out two different types of cleats (one for turf and one for grass), a lacrosse ball he used to roll under his back, everything in there with a clear football purpose,” per The Athletic’s column.
What stood out about the Nix was that Denver Broncos did an analysis of all the quarterbacks and Bo Nix came off as the most accurate. “It took just 16 throws for him [Payton] to make up his mind,” per The Athletic. Also, Nix’s utilization of a “dirty pocket” and his ability to improvise made Sean Payton bet all his chips on the Oregon prospect.
