Texas 5-star safety commit Jonah Williams dominates in season-opener
Galveston (Texas) Ball five-star safety Jonah Williams began his senior season with a bang on Thursday night.
Opening the year on the road at Manvel (Texas), Williams and the Tornadoes were able to score at will in a 54-26 win. The Texas commit began the scoring on the opening kickoff, as he cruised through the Manvel defense for an 85-yard touchdown return.

That was just the beginning of what’s been a highlight-filled evening for the future Longhorn. Soon after, Williams made a big-time play on special teams, blocking an extra point. He’s since added a pair of rushing and receiving touchdowns, totaling five scores on the evening.

Williams is the No. 10 overall prospect and top-ranked safety in the 2025 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 3 player in Texas.
The Swiss-Army knife playmaker pledged to the Longhorns earlier this month on Aug. 24, choosing the in-state school over the likes of LSU, USC and Texas A&M. He doubles as a star on the baseball diamond and intends on playing both sports at the next level in Austin.
“You know they send guys to the league,” Williams told On3. “If you’re a good player you will go to the league from anywhere but why not do it for the home state?”
Jonah Williams Scouting Summary
On3 writes this of Williams as a prospect:
“Jumbo safety prospect with the size, athleticism and playmaking instincts to be a potential queen on the chessboard for defensive coordinators. Has linebacker size with the athleticism of a top defensive back. Measured in at 6-foot-3 ⅛, 206 pounds with 32.25-inch arms at the On3 Elite Series prior to his senior season. Registers as a top athlete in the combine setting. A true three-phase playmaker on Friday nights, lining up at safety, wide receiver and punt returner. An easy, fluid mover with a good top gear. Covers ground in a hurry. Shows outstanding range in coverage. Has high-level ball skills with the ability to track the football over his shoulder. Had four interceptions as a junior along with eight pass breakups. Capable of covering tight ends and receivers out of the slot.
…Has the skill level to be a wide receiver prospect if he wanted. A two-sport standout, as a talented baseball player who throws 94 MPH as a left-handed pitcher. Can continue making strides with his form and physicality as a tackler. Could potentially outgrow the safety spot due to his bigger frame. Rare movement skills and size give him the upside to be a game-changing movable piece at the college and pro level.”
