This song in The Summer I Turned Pretty ‘reveals’ whether Belly chooses Jeremiah in the end

If there’s one thing The Summer I Turned Pretty viewers have learned over the years, it’s that Jenny Han is a master of subtle foreshadowing, and she does it especially well through music. Music has always been one of the show’s secret storytelling weapons.
Bonrad shippers, in particular, know how deeply The Way I Loved You by Taylor Swift has been tied to their relationship since the start. The Summer I Turned Pretty has used songs time and time again to underline major turning points and feelings, so it’s no surprise that season three is continuing that pattern.
Now, although Jenny Han has confirmed that the show’s ending will be different from the book’s, we still don’t officially know if Belly chooses Jeremiah in the end of The Summer I Turned Pretty. Or do we? Because the inclusion of one particular Billie Eilish song in episode three may have just given us a huge clue.
The song in question is Birds of a Feather by Billie Eilish
via Amazon Prime
The episode opens with Belly and Jeremiah kissing after their engagement, and Billie’s Birds of a Feather plays softly in the background. On the surface, it sounds romantic. But if you look at the lyrics, it paints a much more bittersweet picture.
“Birds of a feather, we should stick together, I know. I said I’d never think I wasn’t better alone. Can’t change the weather, might not be forever.”
That last line, might not be forever, feels like a gut punch. Especially when you remember that in the books, Belly and Jeremiah don’t end up together. They break off their engagement, and Belly eventually reunites with Conrad. Plus, “infinity” and “forever” have always been tied to Conrad. He’s the one who gave Belly the infinity necklace, after all.
And there’s more. Later in the song, Billie sings, “But you’re so full of sh*t, Tell me it’s a bit, no. Say you don’t see it, your mind’s polluted. Say you wanna quit, don’t be stup*d.”
Suddenly, the mood shifts. There’s doubt, anger, even desperation. It mirrors where Belly and Jeremiah are emotionally. Their engagement is coming right after betrayal, miscommunication, and a whole lot of confusion. Instead of healing, it feels like they’re rushing into something to fix what’s broken, and that never works out well. Jeremiah’s proposal to Belly felt so off.
Whether or not the show sticks with the book’s ending is still unclear. But Jenny Han doesn’t do anything by accident. The use of Birds of a Feather might just be her way of telling us, Belly and Jeremiah were never meant to last.
