We're here, we're queer, and we will not be ruled by existential fearSometimes joy is our most powerful weapon. At least two thousand protestors filled the streets of Washington, D.C., on Saturday for the Gender Liberation March, in which they not only demanded access to abortion and gender-affirming care, but also celebrated their identities and communities. The march began at Columbus Circle, making its way past the Supreme Court and stopping in front of the headquarters of the Heritage Foundation, authors of Project 2025. The blueprint for former president Donald Trump’s potential second term calls to ban fundamental reproductive health care, from abortions and gender-affirming care to basic contraception.“It was important for us to have that moment in front of the Heritage Foundation as a way to bring our queer joy right to their offices and show that no matter what they have planned, they will not win, they will not break us or our spirit,” co-organizer of the march Eliel Cruz said. “Our communities are resilient and we will always come together and fight back against these attacks to control our bodies and decisions about our healthcare. The right-wing apparatus wants to speak about us without knowing or seeing us, and so Gender Liberation March was all about showing up and showing out in our full selves.”Speakers included celebrities like Elliot Page, Julio Torres, and Geena Rocero, as well as a host of activist and community organizers including Gender Liberation Movement leader Raquel Willis, Monica Simpson of SisterSong, Renee Bracey Sherman of WeTestify, Bamby Salcedo of the Trans Latina Coalition, Oluchi Omeoga of the Black LGBTQIA+ Migrant Project, and others working for gender justice and liberation. The march also featured performances by Peppermint, Junior Mintt, and the House Miyake-Mugler.“The Gender Liberation March was an incredible show of solidarity, a celebration of liberation, and a reminder that we are resilient," founder and co-executive director of We Testify Renee Bracey Sherman said. "In this critical moment, it’s imperative that we hear stories of people who have abortions and trans folks, and that is central to our call to action for racial, immigrant, and economic justice. I couldn’t believe how beautiful it was to see a sea of people dancing, hugging, and building the world we want full of love. That joy — and organizing — is the perfect antidote to Project 2025.”Scroll to see more images of queer joy and defiance from the Gender Liberation March.
