Second-year surge: Georgia PK Peyton Woodring
Georgia’s 2024 roster is set. The winter and spring transfer portal windows are closed and Kirby Smart now knows what players will be on his roster when preseason camp begins around August 1. The Bulldogs will be ranked by most, if not all, as the No. 1 team in the country going into the coming season.
If they’re going to live up to that hype, some guys are going to have to step up in their second seasons with the team. Below DawgsHQ continues a series discussing each player going into their second year with the program. We’re wrapping up the series today with a second-year starting specialist
PK Peyton Woodring
Size: 5-foot-10 175 pounds
On3 Industry Ranking: 1,758 overall, No. 1 place-kicker, No. 63 in Louisiana
2023 Stats: Woodring won the starting place-kicker job during preseason camp after enrolling over the summer. He held onto that job for the entire season and was a semifinalist for the Lou Groza Award, and honor that goes nationally to the nations top place-kicker. Woodring hit 21 of 25 field goal opportunities and made all 71 of his PAT chances.
Woodring strengths and weaknesses
Not enough can be said for how Woodring handled his first season of college ball. The Louisiana native showed big-time competitiveness by winning the job during preseason camp and overcame some adversity early in his career. He missed just five kicks on the year but three of those came in his second and third games. Woodring made just two of five field goals against against Ball State and South Carolina before making 16 in a row.
Woodring has a strong leg and showed the ability to drive the football. He can also elevate it quickly on the shorter kicks and it doesn’t seem as if he lets the moment get to him all that much.
The Buzz…
Specialists don’t generate much buzz on the practice field but we heard nothing to suggest that Woodring is leaving the door open for someone to take the job from him. He had a strong showing in the G-Day game and appears to have a firm grasp on the field goal and PAT duties.
In 2024…
Georgia is no longer in a transition year at place-kicker. After three years of Jack Podlesny, the Bulldogs went into 2023 having to break in a new guy. Woodring more than held his own and now UGA can look forward to two or three more years of a guy who has shown to be quite reliable. That’s huge when you consider how many tough games are on the schedule in 2024.
