BURBANK, IL — A GoFundMe has been started for a Reavis High School student who was left with severe injuries after being struck by a car Monday morning.Just after 7 a.m., Rubi Valladares was crossing 79th Street when she was hit by a Nissan Maxima traveling westbound near Mansfield Avenue. According to a Burbank police crash report, the driver of the Nissan, a 30-year-old Chicago woman, failed to reduce speed to avoid hitting a pedestrian. The driver was taken into custody at the scene. Family members say they were told by Burbank police that the Chicago woman was driving on a suspended license. The crash report noted that the Nissan’s front bumper and windshield were shattered from the impact of the crash.>>> Help Jissela's Family During Rubi's RecoveryRubi was rushed to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, where she is in critical but stable condition, receiving treatment for a fractured skull, fractured pelvis, fractured ribs, brain bruising, facial fractures and bleeding in the spleen. To help her mom, Jissela Miranda, a single parent of five children, her employer, Silvia Rios, manager of Great American Bagel in Palos Heights where Jissela is employed full-time, has started a GoFundMe to assist the family with paying bills and medical costs. On top of being a hard worker, Jissela is a dedicated mother, her boss said. Jissela has not been back to work since the accident.“Rubi’s road to recovery will take time and will put Jissela in a very strenuous position as she has to take time away from her job to care for and support Rubi as she embarks on her road to recovery. As Jissela stands by her daughter’s side we would like to collect enough money to help cover the family’s financial needs as well as any out of pocket costs Rubi’s recovery may incur.”The teen also worked part-time at Great American Bagel, trying to earn some money for her own expenses to ease the financial strain on her mother.“Rubi is a quiet girl, she always did her work,” Rios said. “She was a typical 15-year-old girl who wanted to make some extra cash.Rubi is the oldest of five siblings, ages 14, 13, 8 and 5. She is a freshman at Reavis High School in Burbank. She’s always enjoyed going on long walks and to the park. She has always been an exemplary daughter and sister, and a great friend to those lucky enough to know her, her family said.“She has a long road back to recovery,” said Joaana Miranda, Rubi’s aunt. “Jissela spends all her time at the hospital. She’s a single mom doing everything herself. We’re helping her so she doesn’t have to worry about bills piling up.”Rubi has undergone two successful surgeries this week, but more are on the horizon as she lays in a hospital bed at Advocate Christ. The adults in her family remain hopeful and stoic for Rubi. The very youngest of her siblings do not know the severity of their sister’s injuries.Miranda wants to bring awareness to the inordinate number of crashes and accidents happening recently, most caused by impaired drivers and speeders. “There are accidents happening all over here,” the teen’s aunt said. “These southwest towns are known for speeding and accidents, and hit and runs.”To donate to Rubi’s GoFundMe, visit Help Jissela's Family During Rubi's Recovery. The article Reavis Student Hit By Car Walking To School Seriously Injured appeared first on Oak Lawn, IL Patch.
