Fairfield University Student Killed In Car Crash On Way Home: School

FAIRFIELD, CT — A Fairfield University student was killed in a car crash Thursday while on his way home to Massachusetts, following the completion of his junior year, the university announced Friday.Details of the crash that killed Alexander Dennis, a student in the College of Arts and Sciences, were not disclosed, but in a post on the school's Facebook page, Dennis is remembered as a visual and performing arts major with a special interest in film."At a time of year when we are actively engaged in the celebration of our students and their accomplishments, a loss like this seems inconceivable," wrote Fairfield University President Mark R. Nemec, PhD. "Those who knew and loved Alex will be especially impacted by his passing, and his loss will be felt across campus. Our Jesuit colleagues are available to our community, as are staff members from Campus Ministry and the Counseling Center. For employees, the Employee Assistance Program (EAP) may also be a helpful resource at this time." The university plans to celebrate Dennis' life in the fall when students return to campus.Where Dennis died was not immediately known, but WFSB-TV reported that he was the wrong-way driver in the fatal crash on Route 15 that killed four in Stratford on Thursday.Patch reached out to Connecticut State Police for comment, but authorities have not confirmed that report. One of the vehicles in the crash, a 2016 Honda CR-V, is registered to a person in Massachusetts who shares a last name with Dennis.Injuries to the driver of the Honda were extensive, and state police have not been able to positively identify that individual. An autopsy is being performed to determine the person's identity.Three Easton residents — driver Steven P. Rowland, 65, and passengers Thomas L. Vitale, 80, and Olga Vitale, 81 — were the other three people killed in the Stratford crash. The crash remains under investigation, police are urging anyone with information to contact Connecticut State Police Troop G at 203-696-2500."Fairfield University was notified by the family of one of our beloved students, Alexander Dennis '25, that he died early yesterday morning in a tragic car accident," university Vice President of Marketing and Communications Jennifer Anderson told Patch in a statement, echoing Nemec's remarks. "As our University community mourns, we hold the Dennis family, friends and all of those impacted in our prayers during this difficult time. In this time of grief, members of our Jesuit Community, Counseling Services, and the Office of Student Life are offering support to the Dennis family, friends and classmates."The article Fairfield University Student Killed In Car Crash On Way Home: School appeared first on Fairfield, CT Patch.
