John Legend & Wyclef Jean Slam Donald Trump For His Claims That Haitian Migrants Are Eating Cats & Dogs In Ohio
John Legend has a few words after Donald Trump‘s outlandish claims that Haitian migrants are abducting and eating people’s pet cats and dogs in Springfield, Ohio.
The Grammy-winning artist, who is from Springfield, hailed the city as one with plenty of job opportunities under Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ administration.
The former president, who’s running for the head of state against Kamala Harris, made the remarks during his and the vice president’s debate on Tuesday, Sept. 10.
In a lengthy social media video, John Legend added,
“Nobody’s eating cats. Nobody’s eating dogs.”
He added,
“How about we love another?”
He added that in the last five years, the population of Springfield has decreased from 75,000 to 60,000 and many Haitian immigrants who “came to our country legally” stepped in to help fill jobs. He also noted that the “25% increase” in the population presented “challenges” for the city, like differences in language, culture, and “dietary preferences.”

He added,
“I think all of us need to have the same kind of grace that we would want our ancestors” with “our Haitian brothers and sisters.”
He went on to share more about local immigrants, stating that they’re typically successful.
“They are hard-working. They are ambitious. They commit less crime than native-born Americans, and they will assimilate and integrate in time, but it takes time. I grew up in the Christian tradition. We said to love our neighbor as we love ourselves and treat strangers as though they might be Christ. So, how about we adopt that ethos when we talk about immigrants moving to our communities and don’t spread hateful, xenophobic, racist lies about them.”
He signed off of the video by “John R. Stevens from Springfield,” a reference to his real name.

He also changed the phrase to the name on his Instagram bio.
Wyclef Jean, who was born in Haiti and moved to NYC when he was 9 years old, also responded to Donald Trump’s controversial remarks.
“I will be forever grateful for my family’s life, for having a fair chance to live what is called the ‘American Dream.’”
He said that Haitian-Americans are “good neighbors and good people,” adding,
“On behalf of Haitian Americans, I ask that we stop these racist messages and accusations. Put our hands out in peace and say thanks for being my neighbor. We need to respect one another and vote based on policies and facts, not crazy talk. And we need to shake hands with one another and be thankful we are part of an America for all.”
Meanwhile, the actual city of Springfield has also addressed Donald Trump’s comments. Mayor Rob Rue said,
“We have not been able to verify any credible reports or specific claims of pets being harmed, injured, or abused by individuals within the immigrant community.”
Donald Trump’s running mate JD Vance started all of this when he tweeted a day before the debate,
“Months ago, I raised the issue of Haitian illegal immigrants draining social services and generally causing chaos all over Springfield, Ohio. Reports now show that people have had their pets abducted and eaten by people who shouldn’t be in this country. Where is our border czar?”
