We finally know what happened to Sheldon and Amy after The Big Bang Theory

The Young Sheldon finale aired last night and finally gave fans much-needed answers about the Big Bang Theory – as well as a few more questions to ponder.
The hit series, a prequel spin-off of the original sitcom, came to an end on Thursday after seven years on our screens.
In emotional scenes, the Cooper family bid farewell to George Sr (Lance Barber) before the titular character (Ian Armitage) left the nest and moved across the country to attend Caltech – where he would eventually meet his best friends and expand his career.
Throughout the episode, we were transported to the present day as Jim Parsons reprised his role as ‘older’ Sheldon, beside on-screen wife Amy Farrah Fowler (Mayim Bialik).
Sheldon has been narrating the episodes since the very beginning, but it was revealed in the finale that he has actually been putting pen to paper on his life story the entire time.
In true form, he was so caught up in writing his memoir that Amy had to hurry him up, warning that they’d miss son Leonard’s hockey game for the Pasadena Penguins if he kept going.

The reference to the team name subtly confirmed that, while they had moved out of the Pasadena apartment block – and were no longer living across the hall from pals Leonard Hofstadter (Johnny Galecki) and Penny (Kaley Cuoco) – they were still locals.
We also learned that the couple also welcomed an unnamed daughter at some point, but neither seem to have followed their parents’ academic footsteps – thanks to Penny.
‘Your daughter wants to take acting classes,’ Amy informed her husband, who fumed: ‘I told you we never should have let Penny babysit.’
This has left us with a few more questions – will we ever learn her name? Does this mean Penny returned to her acting career? Do the kids all have a close bond like their parents?
Although we didn’t get an update on how Leonard, Penny, Howard (Simon Helberg), Raj (Kunal Nayyar) and Bernadette (Melissa Rauch) were doing, executive producer Steve Holland revealed that they are still as close as ever.

Speaking to TVLine, he enthused: ‘I think they’re still close, and still friends. It was important for us at some point to put in an establishing shot of the house they were in because we wanted to make sure people didn’t think they were still in the apartment.
‘It doesn’t look exactly the same, but it doesn’t look so different that you could not look at it [closely enough] and think that it was just the Big Bang Theory set. It was important for us to let people know that they have a house. They’ve grown up, they’ve moved out of the apartment.’
Fans will have seen some very familiar items strewn around older Sheldon’s office, including his Nobel Peace Prize, models, toys, framed photos and magazine covers – and even the sofa from their apartment.
Side note: He really went all out to make sure no one sat in his spot…

However, Steve teased that there is one thing nestled in the episode that even the most devout viewer will have completely skipped over.
‘It is for nobody, because no one would recognize it,’ he told Entertainment Weekly. ‘He has an exchange with a professor on campus, and that’s David Saltzberg, who is our science consultant since Big Bang Theory all through Young Sheldon.’
The UCLA professor works as an experimental particle physicist – he has been a huge factor behind the scenes, serving as a scientific consultant on both comedies since the very beginning.

Bosses decided going against using anyone instantly recognizable as they didn’t want to ‘distract’ from the poignant final few seconds – but also wanted to mark David’s contribution to the universe so far.
‘And we realized [David], other than Chuck and Jim, has been with this character the longest, because he worked on the first Big Bang Theory pilot, so it’s really just a nice way for us to honor David and all the contributions he’s made to both of these shows for the last 16 years.’
If you need us, we’ll be rewatching the finale with a magnifying glass…
Young Sheldon is available to stream on Paramount+ now.
