Georgia Amoore looking forward to competing in the SEC
Playing in the ACC for four years and then making the jump to the SEC is quite the move, and it’s one that Georgia Amoore will make. The 2023-24 Third Team AP All-American will go down as one of the best players in Virginia Tech history, but now, she’ll test her talents at Kentucky.
Amoore’s 656 career assists are first all-time for the Hokies, and she is top five in several other categories for Virginia Tech. That includes games started, points, field goals, and three-pointers. She was a superstar in Blacksburg, but after her senior year, a big decision was on her hands.
Georgia Amoore could have finished things out at Virginia Tech, returned back home to Australia and gone pro there, or she could have even been a top 10 pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft. Instead, she chooses to come to Kentucky. Kenny Brooks played a huge part in that, but so did the allure of the SEC.
Recently, Amoore appeared on Sunday Morning Sports Talk on 630 WLAP, and she talked about what makes the SEC so appealing. There are powerhouses such as LSU and South Carolina in the SEC, but Amoore was on a powerhouse team at Virginia Tech in the ACC.
“We were a powerhouse for the past two years,” Amoore said about the Hokies. “People did not want to play us, but I mean, I’m definitely prepared [for the SEC]. That was part of the decision — coming over to the SEC, and it’s a different monster.”
Experience playing against SEC opponents
Something else that helped Amoore in gauging the SEC is having played against several SEC teams before. This past season, the Hokies took on the defending national champion LSU Tigers on the road. Amoore led the team in scoring that night with 25 points as well.
The year before, Virginia Tech took on Tennessee and LSU in the NCAA Tournament, and they even beat Missouri in the regular season. (They also beat Kentucky in The Bahamas, but we can sweep that one under the rug.)
“We played against SEC teams in my past years, we played against Tennessee, LSU, we beat Kentucky in The Bahamas,” Amoore noted. “So, those games, they were always high, high motor, high power, had a lot of fun. I think going forward into my professional career, I think [coming to Kentucky/the SEC] was the best step because these girls are some athletes, it’s a whole new brand of basketball.”
She also added, “I’ve done my four years in ACC and it was fun. I think the time I had there was great, but this is just a new change, and it’s going to prep me for future endeavors.”
