News, notes and buzz regarding top prospects and programs across the country as spring turns to summer.
The latest.
On3 Recruiting Prediction Machine Heats Up
Logged several new forecasts this Monday morning.
Texas A&M appears to have the momentum with Galveston (Texas) Ball On3 Industry five-star Jonah Williams following a couple recent visits including the spring game. Mike Elko’s track record developing safeties and the relationship with Ishmael Aristide has Williams feeling very comfortable about a potential future in College Station. There is plenty of competition for the No. 1 ranked safety as he also strongly considers USC, LSU, Ohio State and Oregon among others. Speaking of the Ducks he’ll be back in Eugene on May 17. Official visits are locked in. Williams tells On3 that USC will get the first trip June 2. He’ll head to Texas A&M the weekend of June 8. LSU is set for June 14. Williams will return to Oregon the weekend of June 21.
Texas A&M currently has On3’s No. 14 class. Williams is the No. 10 prospect in the country regardless of position.
Roswell (Ga.) Fellowship Christian On3 Industry five-star offensive lineman Josh Petty has seven official visits scheduled and could soon shake that list up after great spring visits to Notre Dame and Ohio State. In the meantime he has an official visit to Georgia Tech set for May 28, Clemson for May 31, Auburn for June 4, Tennessee for June 7, Stanford for June 10, Oregon for June 14 and Florida State for June 21. Going into those trips I like FSU’s position. Petty’s older sister will be attending school in Tallahassee and going to the same school has always been exciting for them.
“They have some variables working in their favor,” Petty’s father James told On3. “He has a great relationship with the o-line coach (Alex) Atkins and Coach (Mike) Norvell).”
Petty will take his officials and continue through his process. FSU is at or near the top of his list. I like the way it’s trending.
Florida State has the No. 11 class in the land at this point in the cycle. Petty is the No. 2 interior offensive lineman per the On3 Industry and No. 21 prospect overall.
I like Alabama for Carmel (Calif.) High On300 offensive tackle Jackson Lloyd. He is the No. 12 offensive tackle in the country and No. 152 prospect overall per the On3 Industry and he checks in at No. 6 and No. 29 per the On3 rankings. He is the No. 1 prospect in California. The Crimson Tide is in the driver seat. Ohio State among others is trying to change that with the relationship new offensive coordinator Chip Kelly brings with him from his time at UCLA.
Alabama has On3’s No. 6 ranked class.
As Shreveport (La.) Calvary Baptist On300 running back James Simon nears his college decision, the buzz heavily favors Texas. On3 Director of Recruiting Chad Simmons and I join Inside Texas’s Justin Wells in predicting the Longhorns. Notre Dame is the biggest challenger.
“The excitement of them continuing going up and (them) pushing their need of me helping them go up as well,” Simon said of what’s standing out following his recent visit to Austin.
Running backs coach Tashard Choice has been heavily involved in recruiting Simon, who has also built a strong rapport with Sarkisian.
“I love the coaches,” Simon stated. “Who they are as coaches but also people. And the program is building something special definitely with the offense and players in the room.”
Texas has the No. 9 class in the country as it stands right now.
Midwest City (Okla.) Carl Albert On300 cornerback Trystan Haynes will announce his commitment on Tuesday and I join Simmons predicting the Sooners. He has worked with that staff in camp, loves the environment in Norman, proximity and trajectory of the program. Oklahoma currently has the nation’s No. 12 class as they shoot for another Top 10 haul after finishing No. 9 a cycle ago.
The buzz continues to be around Nebraska for Orange (Calif.) Lutheran four-star quarterback TJ Lateef who was in Lincoln for the Huskers spring game. Lateef is target numero uno for head coach Matt Rhule and his staff in the cycle and they continue to put the full-court press on the West Coast passer. Look for the Huskers to have several coaches out to see Lateef in the next couple weeks.
Joined Auburn insiders Jeffrey Lee and Cole Pinkston in predicting Savannah (Ga.) Benedictine Military offensive lineman Jacobe Ward to the Tigers. I now have two offensive linemen slated to ultimately land on The Plains as I still like Auburn for On300 offensive tackle Broderick Shull. Auburn will keep swinging on Petty, they’re in the lead group for five-star offensive tackle Andrew Babalola (with the likes of Michigan, Oklahoma, Stanford and Tennessee).
Top-ranked OT David Sanders Jr. makes it back to Ohio State
The On3 Industry’s No. 1 ranked offensive tackle and No. 2 prospect overall in Charlotte (NC) Providence Day School five-star David Sanders Jr. made his second visit of the spring to Columbus, joined by his parents, three sisters and grandparents.
Ohio State is very real in this one. I put them in the lead group alongside Tennessee in my opinion. I am not discounting the others, Alabama, Clemson, Georgia and South Carolina, I just like the way things are currently trending for the Buckeyes and Vols.
We’ll see how Sanders process continues.
Regarding Ohio State, the Buckeyes were able show Sanders and his family what the program can offer and why they’re so successful developing offensive tackles like Paris Johnson. From the strength training, to the offensive scheme to getting around offensive line coach Justin Frye and head coach Ryan Day, the Big Ten powerhouse aimed to show the Sanders camp why it’s a great fit. The 6-foot-7, 287-pound Sanders loves the football meetings on all of these trips he goes on.
Ohio State is slated to get the last official visit from Sanders the weekend of June 21. He’s already taken his official to South Carolina for the Gamecocks spring game. Also locked in is Clemson on May 31, Georgia on June 7, Tennessee on June 14 and Alabama on June 18. Every program got at least one spring visit with the Vols and Buckeyes getting two.
Ohio State has a chance to put together a strong offensive line class. They already have On300 offensive tackle Carter Lowe in the fold as part of the nation’s No. 1 ranked recruiting class. I’ll put the Buckeyes in pole position right now for Washington (DC) Riverdale Baptist four-star Jayvon McFadden. He made it to a game in the fall and returned this spring.
Roswell (Ga.) High offensive tackle Andrew Stargel was offered at the end of April and will now visit on May 10.
Don’t sleep on Ole Miss for touted QB Keelon Russell
I haven’t been mentioning Ole Miss enough in the recruitment of Duncanville (Texas) High On300 quarterback Keelon Russell. I’ll be listing them as one of the first teams every time going forward.
Currently committed to SMU, Russell’s relationship with the Rebels predates that. Lane Kiffin, Charlie Weis and the Ole Miss staff were one of the first offers and he’s visited Oxford a couple times including a recent official visit.
Russell loves the Ole Miss offense, where the program is at, but more than anything, the fact that they identified him and bought in early well before he’s become a national recruit. Now Alabama, Florida, Texas and Oregon are involved.
Another note, Russell’s mom is from Mississippi.
Russell’s upcoming officials include SMU the weekend of May 17 and then Alabama and Florida the first two weekends of June.
Ole Miss currently has On3’s No. 18 class.
Quick Hitters
Cincinnati (Ohio) Winton Woods On300 edge Justin Hill has locked in his decision date for July 3. The Buckeyes get the first official the weekend of May 31 and I like their position. USC, Alabama and Oregon are the next three weekends.
I like the way it’s starting to trend for Georgia regarding Leesburg (Ga.) Lee County On300 running back Ousmane Kromah. If the Bulldogs are pushing they could be tough to beat.
Speaking of Georgia, assistant coach Chidera Uzo-Diribe will be in to see Elkhart (Ind.) High On300 defensive end Mariyon Dye on Monday. UGA is one of the front runners as they battle Tennessee, Miami, Michigan and Purdue among others.
