Poutine
Our classic Canadian Poutine recipe has french fries and cheese curds with homemade gravy poured on top. This popular dish only takes a few minutes to prepare and makes a fun appetizer or side dish.

Shhh… Don’t tell Canada, but you can make an epic Poutine at home.
I fell in love with Poutine when my husband and I lived in Edmonton, Alberta for a summer. If you’re not familiar, it’s a bed of french fries topped with cheese curds and hot gravy, and it’s heavenly! Comfort food at it’s best. It’s appropriate for any day, but we especially enjoy it on game days, as a party appetizer, of a fun side dish to burgers or other grilled meat and veggies. You could also make it a fun meal by topping with pulled pork, steak, shredded chicken, or crumbled bacon.
How to make Poutine:
Cook Fries: I love my homemade French Fries recipe (includes instructions for frying, baking or air-frying french fries) but frozen store-bought fries will work great. Make the gravy while the fries are cooking.
Make Gravy: Place butter in a pan over medium heat until melted. Add flour and stir constantly for 1-2 minutes. Add onion powder and bouillon then stir. Slowly pour in broth while whisking until smooth and thickened. Taste and season with salt and pepper as needed.
Assemble: When the fries are hot and cooked, place cheese curds on top. White cheese curds are the authentic option, but orange work, or if you have a hard time finding cheese curd you could tear soft mozzarella into chunks. Ladle warm gravy on top. Grab a fork and enjoy!
Make Ahead and Freezing Instructions:
To Make Ahead: You can make the gravy up to 3 days ahead of time, stored in an airtight container in the fridge. Rewarm on the stove or in the microwave.
To Freeze: The components of this dish can be frozen separately. Keep the fries in a freezer safe bag, the curds in a separate freezer bag, and the gravy can be frozen in container, bag, or even in an ice cube tray, for up to 3 months.
Recipe Variations:
Sweet Potato Poutine: Swap the regular fries for sweet potato fries.
Protein: Top it with pulled pork, steak, chicken, or crumbled bacon!

Ingredients1 1/2 lbs French Fries (or 24oz bag frozen)1 ½ cups cheese curds*Poutine Gravy:¼ cup unsalted butter1/4 cup all-purpose flour1/2 teaspoon onion powder1 teaspoon beef bouillon1 teaspoon chicken bouillon2 cups low-sodium chicken brothsalt and freshly ground black pepperUS Customary – Metric
InstructionsFries: Cook according to recipe or package instructions.Gravy: Melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat. Add the flour and cook for 1-2 minutes, stirring well. Add bouillons and onion powder then stir. Slowly whisk in the broth until smooth. Cook, stirring frequently, until thickened. Taste and season with salt and pepper, as needed. (Add a cornstarch slurry (cornstarch dissolved in a little water) if you want a thicker gravy, or add additional broth to thin the gravy, as needed). Remove from heat.Assemble: Add fries to a large serving bowl (or divide between 4 serving containers, for 4 individual servings). Top with cheese curds and ladle gravy on top. Grab a fork and enjoy!
