Greenwich PD Clarifies 'Misinformation' On Recent Criminal Activity

GREENWICH, CT — The Greenwich Police Department on Friday issued a lengthy statement attempting to clarify misinformation regarding recent criminal activity in town, specifically a home invasion that was reported to have occurred during the early morning hours on Friday. On Friday morning, police said a front door alarm sounded at a home in town, and two police officers responded and found the home was undamaged and showed no signs of forced entry. The officers offered to search the residence, police said, but the homeowner declined."GPD would like to clarify that no home invasion or burglary occurred," police said. The department also said it received information Friday morning that the home where the alarm activated was equipped with security cameras that showed men breaking and opening the front door. The information was reported in the wake of police advising residents on May 2 about recent theft of high-end cars, specifically BMWs, and that if car keys are not readily accessible, thieves are entering homes and searching for them in "mud room" areas."Detectives investigating the recent burglaries were immediately detailed to respond to the residence [Friday morning], only to find that there were no security cameras and no evidence that the door had been tampered with or even opened," police said."The Greenwich Police Department understands that recent burglaries committed by car thieves have caused fear and alarm in our community. The idea of criminals entering an occupied home is indeed a frightening matter, and we want to assure you that the Greenwich Police Department is working diligently to identify, locate, and apprehend these criminals."Also earlier this week, Greenwich police tracked down and arrested five people in the backcountry in connection with recent motor vehicle thefts. Police said they used tire deflation devices and deployed K-9s and the department's drone unit during a pursuit early Wednesday morning."Further, we understand the emotions that these burglaries can evoke, but we urge residents to refrain from spreading misinformation," police added. "Misinformation and inaccurate information only serve to heighten the fear and anxiety that residents may already be experiencing."Police said burglaries in town on April 30 and May 1 were connected to car thefts, and in response, the department noted it has taken "proactive measures" such as setting up extra patrols and assigning additional officers to an auto theft detail."Furthermore, we have collaborated with law enforcement agencies in New York and Connecticut to identify and apprehend suspects involved in these crimes," police explained. "Since May 1, we have located and apprehended nine suspects in stolen vehicle investigations in Greenwich, and our Detective Division is making progress in the open and dynamic investigation of the April 30 and May 1 burglaries."Police on Friday urged residents to take necessary precuations to protect themselves and their property, and the department reminded the public to lock their cars, activate alarms and ensure security cameras, if equipped, are working properly."While police officers cannot always be everywhere, we want to reaffirm our commitment to providing superior law enforcement services to the town of Greenwich," police said. "We will not cease to prevent and deter criminal activity and apprehend criminal actors who come to our town."Residents should contact 911 and not intervene in criminal activity. The article Greenwich PD Clarifies 'Misinformation' On Recent Criminal Activity appeared first on Greenwich, CT Patch.
