Girl, 10, With Cerebral Palsy Shines In Lacrosse With Students' Device
PRINCE GEORGE'S COUNTY, MD — A 10-year-old girl with cerebral palsy needed a little extra help shooting the lacrosse ball from her wheelchair. Stella Stakolosa loves lacrosse, but that speedbump in her play was frustrating. So students from College Park Academy, a charter high school in Riverdale Park, designed a device to help Stella. It even has her name on it. The lacrosse stick mounted to her wheelchair had a trigger mechanism that allowed her to launch a ball simply by pulling on a string. After two open heart surgeries, a stroke and an endless stream of doctor's visits, playing lacrosse is something Stella looks forward to. The determined little girl has let nothing stop her, her mother told The Washington Post. She not only plays lacrosse, but she also enjoys swimming, cheerleading and horseback riding. Thanks to Parkville Adaptive Lacrosse, which launched in 2001 to welcome developmentally challenged players and help make the game safe and enjoyable for them, Stella now plays lacrosse.Read more about Stella and her new device that helps her play lacrosse even better than before in The Washington Post The article Girl, 10, With Cerebral Palsy Shines In Lacrosse With Students' Device appeared first on Bowie, MD Patch.
