KDY Crew Member Azriel Ethan Echavarria Sentenced to 16 Years for Violent Crime Spree in Washington, D.C. Area
Azriel Ethan Echavarria, 22, from Washington, D.C., has been handed down a hefty 16-year prison sentence for his role in a series of bold armed carjackings and violent robberies throughout the District and its Maryland suburbs, it was announced by federal prosecutors.
Acting as part of the notorious Kennedy Street Crew, also known as KDY, Echavarria admitted his involvement in the aggressive crime wave that terrorized local communities in early 2022 and, acknowledging guilt on charges of conspiracy to interfere with interstate commerce and armed robbery, he is now facing 192 months behind bars followed by 60 months supervised release, as per sentencing by U.S. District Judge Beryl A. Howell. The crew's exploits include six individual robberies, assaults on five businesses or their staff, and two armed carjackings, a brazen spree of violence that put residents on high alert and prompted a full-scale federal response.
According to a press release from the Department of Justice, Echavarria's fellow KDY member Tyrell Jordan Stewart, 26, previously received a 15-year prison sentence in connection with the same series of crimes after entering a guilty plea earlier this year.
The crackdown on KDY is the product of a sustained, intensive effort by law enforcement from the Metropolitan Police, FBI, ATF, and local police forces in Montgomery and Prince George’s counties, these agencies combination of resources reflects a determined push to dismantle criminal operations like KDY that hold whole neighborhoods hostage with their brand of organized terror.
Prosecution efforts are bolstered by the Organized Crime Drug Enforcement Task Forces program, which plays a pivotal role in undoing the work of highest-level drug traffickers, gangs, and across-border criminals who pose a threat to public safety and national security. The case against Echavarria and his associates was painstakingly built by a team of dedicated prosecutors including Assistant U.S. Attorneys Matthew W. Kinskey and Sitara Witanachchi as well as Special Assistant U.S. Attorney Timothy J. Coley, with former Special Assistant Brian Lynch also contributing critical support.
