Jayden Daniels reveals tension following Joe Burrow at LSU, what it would mean to beat him on MNF
Monday night’s game against the Cincinnati Bengals meant a little more to Jayden Daniels because of the opportunity to face Joe Burrow. Both are former Heisman-winning quarterbacks at LSU who left a lasting impact at the school.
Daniels, now starting for the Washington Commanders in his rookie season, came to Baton Rouge three seasons after Burrow led the Tigers to a national title in 2019. He admitted pregame to ESPN sideline reporter Lisa Salters that it was difficult following in those footsteps.

Of course, Daniels eventually carved out his own path and will be remembered for his own accomplishments across his two seasons. Still, the competitor in him wanted badly to get the win in their first matchup in the pros.
“Jayden Daniels said it would mean a lot for him to get a win tonight against another LSU brother, particularly because he still remembers how challenging it was to follow in Burrow’s footsteps in Baton Rouge,” Salters said on the broadcast. “He said Burrow set a high standard, which he appreciated and respected, but he said it also got tiring constantly being compared to him all the time. He said walking around hearing, ‘Joe this, Joe that.’
“But by the time he left he said he thinks he was able to forge his own legacy. He said, ‘people were able to see Joe and I differently, just put us in two separate categories.'”

So far Daniels has the Commanders leading 31-26 with 9:10 remaining in the fourth quarter. He has completed 16-of-18 passes for 200 yards and a touchdowns while adding 38 yards rushing and another score on the ground.
Burrow has been equally impressive with 273 yards passing and three touchdowns. The Bengals are still looking for their first win of the season.
However, Daniels and the Commanders will hope to spoil that and hang on for the win. If they can do so, it would mark a 2-1 start to the year.
