Roofing Scam Targeting Elderly Leads To 3 Arrests In San Mateo: Police
SAN MATEO, CA — Three Virginia men arrested this month are accused of using fake names and business licenses to pose as roofers and scam elderly victims on the Peninsula, according to police. Detectives began investigating the case in November and learned about a group of men with "Irish accents" linked to a fake construction company called "Statewide Roofing and Siding." Investigators said the men used a counterfeit contractor license and overcharged elderly victims for work that was not completed or not needed. Police identified additional victims across San Mateo County, and on May 7 received another report from a man who said a roofing company he hired to repair his mother's roof was scamming him. The man said he agreed to a "free" roof inspection that identified minor repairs. Police allege cost estimates soared as the company tacked on more work and eventually claimed the entire roof needed to be replaced. While investigating the case, detectives determined the suspects were using another fake company, "Teco Roofing and Masonry," and moved to arrest the men the following day. Police on Thursday identified the men as Charlie Anderson, 22, David Anderson, 39, and Darren Temple, 40, all of Herndon, Virginia. The trio were booked into jail on suspicion of multiple crimes, including theft, conspiracy and obtaining money under false pretenses.Investigators believe there could be more victims in the case, and ask anyone who dealt with "Statewide Roofing and Siding" or "Teco Roofing and Masonry" to contact San Mateo police. The article Roofing Scam Targeting Elderly Leads To 3 Arrests In San Mateo: Police appeared first on San Mateo, CA Patch.
