The Director of ‘Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo’ Really Wants to Make a Legacy Sequel
Legacy sequels typically combine fresh young talent with the haggard stars of yesteryear, rebooting familiar franchises for new audiences while staying within the parameters of any previously established continuity. Now, after seeing Luke Skywalker mentor Rey in the Star Wars sequels, and Tom Cruise enroll back in Top Gun school, we could see the return of Deuce Bigalow, the titular “male gigolo.” It’s funny because it rhymes.In an interview with Comingsoon.net, director Mike Mitchell teased/threatened the return of Rob Schneider’s fish-tank-cleaner-turned-sex-worker character. After virtually chatting about his latest film, Kung Fu Panda 4, Mitchell was asked about Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigolo, which turns 25 years old later this year. Instead of simply slamming his laptop closed and hurling it out of the nearest window, Mitchell was happy to chat about the comedy.When the interviewer mentioned that he was going to see Schneider soon, Mitchell responded, “Tell him let’s make another Deuce Bigalow.” This would probably come as welcome news to Schneider who’s currently in the “getting booed off the stage at Canadian charity events” phase of his career. And Schneider’s most recent film role was as a lawyer in Dead Wrong, a movie that looks like a Scorsese porn parody without the porn.Mitchell seems pretty adamant that Deuce Bigalow should get the Creed treatment, though, stating, “I think it’s time for Rob to mentor a younger ‘man whore’ and carry on the tradition.” So, is he envisioning a sequel where, say, Timothee Chalamet finds a dusty old waterbed and tracks down its original owner, a reclusive old man who teaches him in the ways of relentlessly belittling women and making repugnant gay jokes?Mitchell even went so far as to claim that it was a “great franchise that was stopped too soon,” adding, “I’m ready. Tell (Schneider) I’m ready to make more.” Of course a lot of us felt that this premise was less comedy gold that had been cut down in its prime, and more that it was a paper-thin, unfunny joke that got beaten to death within the first 45 minutes of the first movie. Then there was the sequel, which was somehow even worse. Did anybody walk out of Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo frustrated by all the unanswered questions?Schneider himself has previously suggested that he too would “love to do a third Bigalow movie,” blaming the financial failure of the second movie on overly-aggressive editing, and not, well, everything else about Deuce Bigalow: European Gigolo. It should be noted that Schneider’s statement was made way back in 2008, so there’s no telling if Schneider’s recent conversation to Catholicism would impact his decision to return to the less than wholesome Bigalow-verse.If there really is a God, they’ll put a stop to this movie anyway.You (yes, you) should follow JM on Twitter (if it still exists by the time you’re reading this).
