Jarquez Carter wowed on Hurricanes official visit, down to four with decision date set: “I view Miami differently”
Leading up to his official visit to Miami, the Hurricanes made it clear to Newberry (Fla.) four-star defensive tackle Jarquez Carter that he is a top target for the program this recruiting cycle. This past weekend, he felt just that during his time in South Florida.
“Most definitely,” said Carter, who was hosted by Justin Scott. “They told me they’re losing seven to eight D linemen, said my class is really important when it comes to D linemen. They said they feel I can start off and not start, but get a lot of playing time my freshman year, said my work ethic will make me different from a lot of people. They said losing people, that’s an opening for me.”
OFFICIAL VISIT RECAPS: SJ Alofaituli … Herbert Scroggins … USC commit Hylton Stubbs … Jarquez Carter … DL Randy Adirika …Iose Epenesa …Commit Elijah Melendez Less than 36 hours removed from his official visit to Ohio State, Carter, and his family made their way down to Coral Gables for his OV with the Canes. Carter says he was especially wowed by coaches, including Mario Cristobal, Jason Taylor and Joe Salave’a, saying “They are the best in the business and they actually care. Coach Cristobal – most head coaches aren’t even around during OVs. He’s the first head coach to give a presentation about how the school is. You can tell he actually cares about the players, that it’s more like a family than a business.” With all his official visits in the books, Carter will take an in-depth look at each of his top programs before making a decision about where he will commit.
Carter says he will be choosing between Miami, UCF, Penn State and Ohio State.
His commitment date is set for July 18.
“Really it’ll be about stability on the head coach, because if the head coach leaves everyone leaves,” Carter said. “I’ll be looking at what style of play I fit, what team fits my style of play and really the culture.”
He says off the visit that “I view Miami differently.”
“At first a lot of people think Miami is a bad city because of the reputation of Miami, but the school is completely separate,” Carter said. “It’s like its own city. They had a big church event and you could see the community getting together, just trying to vibe and chill. Miami, the school is helping the city become a better place. The school is putting in the effort to help the city, the community service. You see the players actually care about the community service. Justin Scott was telling me any chance he gets, whether a camp, going to be with kids, he always does that to build up his brand and his name so they can know who he is as a person.” A 6-foot-2, 270-pounder he is the No. 392 overall prospect in the 2025 class according to the On3 Industry Ranking.
A final takeaway?
“This is like home,” Carter said. “I’m from Florida, never lived anywhere else but Florida. Out here with the heat, everybody says the heat is a bad thing but I love the heat. I’d rather the heat than the cold, rather sweating than shivering.” CaneSport’s take
Stay tuned here, as Miami certainly made a big impact on Carter on this visit. Carter also said he bonded well with Justin Scott on the visit. “We were talking about high school, the way he played – was showing me film how as a taller guy how he had to learn to flip his hips more. He was helping me out. And we were with Booker Pickett, and he was telling me it’s all about the work and how college is kind of easier than high school because in college they give you the opportunities that you need. He said it’s nearly impossible to fail in college because of how much tutoring you get, how much people are putting into you. He said if you’re failing you don’t care, and if you don’t care then no college wants you. We were talking about real stuff with each other.”
