12 Cynical: ‘The Office’
AT&T kicked off some kind of vague small business-oriented campaign by buying billboards claiming that Craig Robinson was quitting comedy. The big reveal was that he was trying to start his own small business, and was teaming up with The Office B-team to do so.
11 Satisfying: ‘School of Rock’
The cast came together in 2013 for a 10-year anniversary special screening, including a Q&A and a performance by the band.
10 Cynical: ‘True Detective’
Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson teamed up to ask the Texas state government to incentivize TV shows and movies to move production to the criminalized abortion and rolling blackout capital of America (in other words, a “True to Texas” ad written by True Detective creator Nic Pizzolatto).
9 Satisfying: ‘Matilda’
Mara Wilson, Danny DeVito, Rhea Perlman and more came together for a “tea party” that included fond recollections, behind-the-scenes revelations and a recreation of that chocolate cake scene.
8 Cynical: ‘Modern Family’
Four years after the show ended, Ty Burrell, Julie Bowen, Eric Stonestreet and Jesse Tyler Ferguson reunited to convince fans to move their family group chat to WhatsApp.
7 Satisfying: ‘The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’
The surviving cast and crew got together to talk about the show’s legacy. Notably absent was the late James Avery, and notably present was Janet Hubert, the original Aunt Viv, who came on to publicly bury the hatchet with Will Smith.
6 Cynical: ‘Gilmore Girls’
The seven-season classic got a four-part miniseries in 2016, nine years after it was cancelled. But that wasn’t enough; in 2024, fans got what they really wanted — a 30-second Walmart ad where some garbage gets delivered to Luke’s diner.
5 Satisfying: ‘Monty Python’
1998’s Monty Python Live at Aspen was their first show in 18 years. An urn ostensibly containing Graham Chapman’s ashes was trotted out to “receive” an award, was kicked over by Terry Gilliam and vacuumed up by a stagehand.4 Cynical: ‘That ‘70s Show’
That ‘90s Show had all the cynical nostalgia bait of a desperate reunion. They got Debra Jo Rupp and Kurtwood Smith back in the main cast to reprise their roles, but Laura Prepon and Wilmer Valderrama were merely “recurring cast” and Topher Grace, Mila Kunis, Ashton Kutcher and Tommy Chong made brief, compulsory guest starring appearances. The name “Hyde” isn’t mentioned throughout all three seasons.3 Satisfying (For a While): ‘A Very Brady Christmas’
Fourteen years after The Brady Bunch went off the air, A Very Brady Christmas had the cast (minus Cindy) reunite for a yuletide romp that was actually very well received. It led to the 1990 resurgence of the Bunch, an hour-long dramedy called The Bradys that lasted six episodes.
2 Cynical: ‘The Sopranos’
To promote a new sparkling water line that’s supposed to be “inspired by Italy,” Sanpellegrino got two low-level mob bosses from New Jersey — Christopher Moltisanti and Bobby Bacala — to “strengthen the emotional connection consumers have with our brand.”1 Surprisingly Satisfying: ‘Breaking Bad’
Bryan Cranston, Aaron Paul and Vince Gilligan got back together to produce an ad that just substituted high quality meth with PopCorners, but you know what? Nobody phoned it in — they faithfully recreated the dramatic energy of the show, and it was a perfectly acceptable reunion. Besides, they gave us El Camino, they gave us Better Call Saul… they’ve more than fulfilled their fans’ need for in-universe content, and they deserve to goof off and make some money.
