PURDUE BASKETBALL/RECRUITING
We’ve already reported here some significant stuff, but recapping and adding to it.
• Purdue’s expanded board in 2025 recruiting does have everything to do with potential changes that might come from the House settlement in terms of roster sizes and scholarship/salary slot limits.
(No, we don’t know what becomes of walk-ons. Not sure anyone does.)
• Purdue has been working to finalize a neutral-site meeting with Auburn in Birmingham this season. Whether that would mean the Tigers would come to the Indy Classic the following year, we don’t know. Texas A&M is a one-off deal and Arizona wound up being a one-off.
• We’ve been told that Notre Dame and Arkansas are out of the San Diego MTE and that N.C. State and Ole Miss will replace them. BYU remains.
• P.J. Thompson is now one of Purdue’s four designated fully privileged recruiters, meaning he’ll be out during evaluation periods, home visits, open gyms, etc., and will take the lead on certain recruits, wheras before he could only recruit during campus visits or over the phone. Even in that limited role, he did make an impact. Camden Heide, in particular, was a player Thompson struck up a strong relationship with, and the synergy that seems to exist right now between him and Braden Smith is probably a testament to his ability to connect with players, communicate, etc.
Purdue’s long-believed that Thompson would be a great recruiter and this accelerates his growth in that regard and just makes sense. Thompson will be at Purdue for years to come. Putting him in on the ground floor of these 2026 recruitments — players he may coach one day — is just the practical thing to do.
Within minutes of Terry Johnson getting the head coaching job he’s overdue for, Thompson will take on an assistant coach title but right now there’s really nothing he’s removed from.
• Trey Kaufman-Renn is currently in Marion, living in an Airbnb with Northwestern’s Brooks Barnhizer so they can work out each day with former Purdue women’s basketball player Courtney (Moses) Delk and her husband, Jordan, who run a training business there. Will Berg will be joining them soon. He’s home now. They previously worked with Mason Gillis and maybe others.
• Purdue’s going to try to shake things up in the recruitment of Braylon Mullins, but won’t be alone. Hard to say with any certainty whether Purdue will have a chance there, but I think they will listen to what Purdue has to say. They are really far down the road with Indiana and Notre Dame and now has bluebloods involved. Anyone assuming that just because Purdue has been great lately that it’s just going to walk in and get these guys is getting ahead of themselves. But they’ll try. Have to get him on campus in June.
Same for Antione West. (BN)
PURDUE FOOTBALL
• Heard some talk that TV honchos wanted to move Purdue’s home game/Big Ten opener vs. Nebraska to Friday night, Sept. 27, from Sept. 28. But that’s Homecoming for Purdue. And, schools have the right to veto having their Homecoming game moved off Saturday.
PURDUE FOOTBALL RECRUITING
• The need for another long-snapper is real. Ideally, it is an older kid from portal the staff can get to come to camp on June 1. If a third long-snapper can be brought it, it definitely would be a high school kid from camp.
• Staffers will be back in the office next Tuesday, with youth camp beginning Wednesday. Assistants will attend a national showcase camp at Wayne State in Michigan next week. And incoming freshmen/newcomers will move in beginning May 31. It’s getting more real.
• Purdue will have the first of its OVs on May 31-June 1. Two are slated to visit:
2025 OL Harrison Cluff
2025 EDGE Mariyon Dye
• Purdue will have its specialist camp on June 1 and its first prospect camp the next day. The other June camp days are June 5th and June 19th. How many commitments could the Boilermaker expect to receive in the Class of 2025? Last June, Purdue received seven commitments: LB Owen Davis, DT Drake Carlson, WR Zion Gunn, S Dillon Thieneman, DE Will Heldt, WR Ryne Shackelford, WR Jaron Tibbs.
• What 2025 recruits look poised to possibly commit to Purdue in June? Three names to keep on your radar:
WR Brian Kortovich, Cleveland Villa Angela-St. Joseph
LB Grant Beerman West Chester (Ohio) Lakota West
DL Kyler Garcia, Nashville Pearl-Cohn
All three will take an official visit to Purdue June 7-9.
• Where does Purdue stand with some top uncommitted 2025 Indiana prospects?
• On WR JonAnthony Hall: We think Purdue feels good about him but will have to battle for him. He’s an intelligent kid, so Northwestern and Stanford are causes for concern, especially Northwestern being close enough to home for him.
• On OL Cameron Gorin: Not sure what’s up with Gorin. He wants to take his OVs and go through the process, it seems.
• On EDGE Mariyon Dye: It’ll be a battle, but Purdue is in the mix; staying close to home will be key. The Boiler staff is playing up that aspect.
• On CB Mason Alexander: We think Purdue feels good about where it’s at with him; just gotta keep recruiting and close it out.
• On WR Lebron Hill: It’s thought Purdue is the leader in the clubhouse for the rangy Northwest Indiana target.
• On WR Davion Chandler: Hard to tell with the Indy wideout, since he’s never been on campus.
• On TE Nizyi Davis: Maybe 50/50; perhaps a bit better. It has been difficult to read the big tight end.
• The ship has sailed on EDGE Damein Shanklin (Indianapolis Warren Central), TE Brock Schott (Leo, Ind., Junior/Senior) and CB Mark Zackery (Indianapolis Ben Davis). Shanklin is down to Notre Dame and Ohio State, Tennessee, Alabama; Schott has committed to Miami (Fla.); Zackery is down to Florida, Cincinnati, Michigan and Notre Dame.
Top in-state targets set to OV in June
OL Cameron Gorin, Fishers (Ind.) Hamilton Southeastern
CB Mason Alexander, Fishers (Ind.) Hamilton Southeastern
EDGE Mariyon Dye, Elkhart (Ind.) Central
WR JonAnthony Hall, Fishers (Ind.)
WR Lebron Hill, Hammond (Ind.) Morton Senior
WR Davion Chandler, Indianapolis Lawrence North
TE Nizyi Davis, Indianapolis Lawrence Central
