Virginia Dream FC Defeats Alexandria Reds 3-2 to Advance in Playoffs
By Virginia Dream FC
Virginia Dream FC will now play in the Mid-Atlantic Conference Final after earning a come-from-behind 3-2 victory over Alexandria Reds in the Mid-Atlantic Conference Semifinals.
The Dream went down two goals in a rain-delayed first half before scoring three goals in a row in the second half. The first goal was scored by the Capelli Sport 2024 NPSL Golden Boot co-winner Angel Chavez shortly after the halftime break.
The second goal came in the 53rd minute off a corner kick by Roshawn Panton and put into the back of the net by Mike Akinkoye.
Both teams pushed forward after the equalizer looking to win the game in regulation, resulting in multiple chances. Goalkeeper Bill Hamid, who has starred for the likes of D.C. United, Memphis 901, and the U.S. Men’s National Team, made several spectacular saves to keep the score tied late into the game.
In the 89th minute Hamid delivered a pass to RJ Fuentes streaking down the field and got past the Alexandria’s back line. Fuentes spotted Roshawn Panton making a run down the left side and slid a beautiful ball to the runner who calmly placed it into the goal.
The final result was a 3-2 win for Virginia Dream FC. They are now headed to the Mid-Atlantic Conference Final vs. Annapolis Blues FC on Saturday, July 13.
