Amazon delivery van goes up in flames in Washington DC as black smoke billows through the sky

By NIC WHITE FOR DAILYMAIL.COM

An Amazon delivery van has gone up in flames in Washington DC, sending plumes of black smoke into the air that could be seen for miles.

The black petrol-powered Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van caught fire on Clark Street S near 23rd Street South in Arlington, Virginia.

Arlington Fire and EMS said the van 'caught fire due to a malfunctioning engine. There was no explosion, and no packages were involved'.

The fire spread to nearby bushes in the parking lot where it was left but buildings did not catch fire. No one was injured.

The smoke could be seen from the other side of the city in the northeast suburbs.

Mercedes in 2023 ordered a recall of 53,000 Sprinter vans from model years 2019 and 2020 after 11 of them caught on fire.

The layout of fuses can cause a wiring harness in their climate control systems to overheat, potentially leading to a vehicle fire, the recall warned.

Whether the van that exploded was one of those subject to the recall is unknown.

Fire marshals will investigate the blaze.
