An NYPD officer and at least three other victims were killed in a shooting at an office skyscraper in midtown Manhattan Monday evening before the gunman turned the gun on himself, according to police.
The shooting occurred around 6:30 p.m., starting in the lobby of 345 Park Avenue on East 52nd Street, police said. The gunman, armed with what appeared to be an assault rifle, entered the building and opened fire on an NYPD officer and a woman as he sprayed the lobby with bullets.
He then went to the elevator bank and shot a security guard, before heading up to the 33rd floor and shooting a person on that floor as well.
The officer was rushed to the hospital, where he died from his injuries. He was later identified as 36-year-old Didarul Islam, an immigrant from Bangledesh who had been with the department for just over three years.
At least three civilians were killed as well, according to police. Another shooting victim was clinging to life in critical condition at the hospital as of Monday night.
The suspect was later identified as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old from Las Vegas who sources said died from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head on the 33rd floor of the office high-rise. A motive for the shooting was not clear and remains under investigation.
Records indicate that multinational businesses with offices inside the building at that address include the National Football League, as well as financial firms Blackstone and KPMG.
