AMD “Strix Halo” may have up to 16 CPU cores and 40 RDNA 3.5 CUs

AMD's upcoming Ryzen AI 300 lineup could feature a new addition with the introduction of the Max series, powered by the Strix Halo platform. According to recent leaks, AMD is said to be developing three SKUs with up to 16 Zen 5 cores and 40 CUs for graphics.
According to Golden Pig Upgrade (via VideoCardz), at least two new models are expected to have 40 RDNA 3.5 CUs. The difference between them is in the number of CPU cores, where one has 16, and the other has 12.
The Strix Halo APU, which leverages two CCDs, each with eight cores, is speculated to include a model with a single-core chiplet, which would be interesting to see in gaming handhelds. Notably, the leaked lineup does not include any GPU specifications below 32 CUs. The table below summarises the data shared by Golden Pig Upgrade:

CPU cores (Zen 5)

Ryzen AI Max+ 395

32 CUs
Furthermore, the leaker revealed that the Strix Halo can support up to 96 GB of vRAM, which explains AMD's focus on ROCm (Open Compute Platform) compatibility. Additionally, the Ryzen AI 300 Max APUs should feature an XDNA 2 NPU similar to the one on the other Ryzen AI 300 chips. More details on these APUs are expected to be shared at CES 2025.

KitGuru says: Except for the Ryzen AI Max+ 395, the CPU performance of the other Ryzen AI Max APUs is somewhat predictable, as there are similarly-specced Ryzen AI 300 parts. However, on the graphics side, it's hard to know how the Max series will perform, but based on what we've seen from the 890M and 880M iGPUs, expectations are pretty high. The post AMD “Strix Halo” may have up to 16 CPU cores and 40 RDNA 3.5 CUs first appeared on KitGuru.
