Monday’s Dawg Biscuits: Updates on 2025 prospects Mario Nash, Trent Sellers and transfer targets
Step inside for the latest on several 2024 and 2025 prospects on Mississippi State’s radar in football along with transfer targets:
First Biscuit – Starting the day with basketball and the transfer portal, over the weekend Mississippi State had one official visitor in former Vanderbilt transfer center/forward Ven-Allen Lubin. He began his State official visit on Saturday and left on Sunday, and he also officially visited North Carolina last week. While things can change in a second with transfer recruiting, at last check with sources Lubin has not set up any other official visits and the dead period for visits begins on May 22nd and ends on June 2nd. As noted often, should Lubin end up choosing Mississippi State, there will be some other movements in order to make the numbers work. Of course, that was already going to be the case when Riley Kugel committed last week although that one is more about finding minutes for everyone rather than a scholarship numbers deal. Also, I continue to hear that State could still end up adding a younger transfer to the roster, moreso for the future, and one name I’ve heard lately is Oklahoma transfer and freshman guard Kaden Cooper (but I have not confirmed how serious things are with Cooper and State just yet).
Second Biscuit – Staying with the basketball transfer portal, over the weekend I talked with former Miami center and Mississippi State commitment Michael Nwoko, who has three years of remaining eligibility. He is planning to move to Mississippi State on May 31st and enroll for the first summer term, and added that he has been working on his offensive game the most this offseason. He noted that State’s coaches told him to get ready for a lot of running this summer and Nwoko said that would be an adjustment because at Miami, they didn’t run a single suicide the entire year (that is pretty crazy to hear). He is obviously familiar with fellow State commit and former Boston College transfer guard Claudell Harris and said Harris hit a lot of big shots against Miami last year in all three of Boston College’s wins against Miami last season. Nwoko also added that he’s been watching a lot of film on Josh Hubbard in order to find more ways to set up Hubbard in better scoring position.
Third Biscuit – Moving to football and the transfer portal, over the weekend I checked on Mississippi State’s transfer commitments for the spring period and their arrival date to Starkville. This spring the Bulldogs have added defensive back DeAgo Brumfield (Memphis), running back Davon Booth (Utah State), receiver Trent Hudson (New Mexico State), cornerback Montre Miller (West Virginia) and defensive lineman Anthony Johnson (Illinois). Per sources, all should be in good shape with their transfers to State in order to enroll in June and most will start moving to Starkville next week. As discussed on the board, sources still noted that Mississippi State is at the 85-scholarship limit and are not expecting any more additions. I know there’s been some mixed thoughts on that from other sources but we will see how it turns out.
Fourth Biscuit – Staying with football recruiting but also a little of basketball recruiting, too, we are getting closer and closer to camp season for State football and basketball and State football camp sessions get underway next week. Overall, State will have 6-7 camp sessions in the month of June and then they are expecting to also have their annual cookout event in late July that will feature a smaller group of top targets in the Class of 2025 and 2026. What will be different this year with first-year head coach Jeff Lebby will be the large amount of official visitors coming to campus in June and some of those will be coming during camp season. Counting the weekends of June 14-16 and June 21-23, we could see close to 40 official visitors on campus and that is a big difference from previous head coaches who didn’t prefer summer official visits and those were rare in the past.
With basketball, head coach Chris Jans and his staff will have team camps on June 14-15 and the main prospects there will likely be top underclassmen like highly-touted 2026 center Sam Funches of Germantown High School and 2028 forward Erick Dampier Jr. of Madison-Ridgeland Academy. Then in late August, the Bulldogs will also have their elite basketball camp for several top targets from the Southeast, which has become an annual event since the arrival of Jans.
Fifth Biscuit – Also over the weekend I talked more with 2025 offensive lineman and On3 composite four-star prospect Mario Nash of Kemper County High School. Nash continues to be a wanted man on the recruiting trail and has added more Power 5 offers of late, including Alabama and Ohio State last week. He has summer official visits set for Mississippi State, LSU, Clemson and Ole Miss, and also has an unofficial visit set for Ohio State on May 24th. With the recent Alabama offer, Nash noted he will likely officially visit Alabama, as well. Florida State is another program on Nash’s list so it was a bit surprising he doesn’t have an official visit set for Florida State for this summer (of course he can always officially visit Florida State after the summer). Nash mentioned again that his college decision will happen during his senior season and after he finishes up all of his official visits.
And for the gravy on top – And lastly over the weekend, I talked with a source close with 2025 defensive end and On3 three-star prospect Trent Sellers of Faith (Ala.) Academy. Per that source, Mississippi State continues to be in a good position with Sellers, largely due to him and his family’s relationship with defensive line coach David Turner. Sellers has Power 5 offers from Mississippi State, Ole Miss and Nebraska, and I expect that list to grow this summer. It is also worth watching to see if the instate SEC programs get more involved with him. But for now, the Bulldogs are trending well with Sellers, who has hinted at possibly making his college decision later in the summer period.
