Man Killed In Highway Crash In Enfield Identified: State Police
ENFIELD, CT — State police have identified a driver killed in a collision on Interstate 91 southbound Friday afternoon as an Enfield resident.According to a police report, a 2012 Toyota RAV4 operated by William Higgins, 88, was traveling southbound on Route 5 around 2:29 p.m. when it left the road through a wooded grassy area onto the highway, where it collided with a southbound 2022 Kenworth T880 dump truck.Higgins was taken to Hartford Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The truck operator, a 48-year-old man from Ellington, was treated at the same hospital for minor injuries, according to a police report.The crash caused closure of the highway's south side for nearly six miles, between Exits 47 in Enfield and 45 in East Windsor. Traffic on state roads such as routes 5 and 190 was gridlocked for several hours as investigators worked at the scene. As late as 8 p.m., I-91 south was backed up nearly to the Massachusetts border.The crash remains under investigation, and any witnesses are asked to contact Trooper Michael Dean at Troop H at 860-534-1098, or through email at [email protected]. Anyone with a vehicle equipped with a dashcam who may have been driving through the area at the time of the collision is also asked to contact Trooper Dean.
