“I don’t know if he would have been a straight fugitive”: Don Cheadle on the War Machine Movie That Never Happened
There have been several Marvel movies that never happened. From talks of a solo Falcon movie (until Brave New World) to the introduction of Galactus in the MCU, several ideas have been scrapped.

The scrapped ideas included a Don Cheadle movie that would have solely focused on James Rhodes aka War Machine and his friendship with Tony Stark. However, the idea was never put to use.
The Don Cheadle Movie Would Have Been Good
There is no harm in saying that Phases 4 and 5 weren’t the best that the cinematic universe had to offer to the world. The MCU went to a high of Avengers: Endgame and has been trying to regain that same hype ever since.

Several movies, such as Thor: Love and Thunder and The Eternals, suffered terribly. On the other hand, a Don Cheadle movie about War Machine could have been in the works if it wasn’t scrapped.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, the Hotel Rwanda actor talked about the scrapped War Machine movie. From his talks, the story could have been very interesting if the idea wouldn’t have been canceled.
There was definitely going to be a lot of tension between his job as a military man and his allegiances to the code that he swore an oath to uphold, versus the changing world.
He further continued,
I think they probably would have run afoul of each other a little bit, but I don’t know if he would have been a straight fugitive, or if he would have become decommissioned. But there was definitely going to be some tension between those two worlds.
Unfortunately, the movie was never put into production and the idea was killed off. As amazing as the character of War Machine is, fans have felt that they did not really explore that character in much depth throughout the MCU.
On the other hand, Don Cheadle talked about his experience shooting the iconic 2019 film Avengers: Endgame and how he finally felt that the character of James Rhodes belonged in the team.
War Machine Had Always Been a Part of The Avengers
In the 2008 film Iron Man, Terrence Howard portrayed the role of War Machine. Due to some internal ‘difficulties’, Howard was replaced by Don Cheadle in Iron Man 2.

Throughout all the movies that Cheadle has starred in, there have been very few moments where the character of War Machine has really shined. With a plethora of characters, naturally, it would be hard to focus on everyone equally.
As the interview further continued, the Boogie Nights actor revealed that during the events of Avengers: Endgame, War Machine takes the spotlight more than usual.
There’s definitely more of a feeling of belonging with them. He’s not so much straddling one foot in the military. He’s much more on the side of The Avengers than he was prior.
The rest, as we know, remains history. The MCU’s Avengers: Endgame went on to become one of the most amazing films ever made in Hollywood and remains undefeated in the timeline of all the Marvel movies.
