Gov. Tim Walz Activates National Guard After Cyberattack On St. Paul
ST. PAUL, MN — Gov. Tim Walz on Tuesday activated the Minnesota National Guard’s cyber protection unit after a major cyberattack disrupted the City of St. Paul’s digital infrastructure over the weekend.The attack, which began Friday, targeted critical systems and persisted through the weekend, causing widespread service disruptions.In an emergency executive order, Walz said the breach exceeded the city’s internal and commercial response capacity, prompting officials to request state assistance.City of St. Paul"We are committed to working alongside the City of Saint Paul to restore cybersecurity as quickly as possible," Walz said. "The Minnesota National Guard’s cyber forces will collaborate with city, state, and federal officials to resolve the situation and mitigate lasting impacts."According to city officials, some internal systems and online services remain temporarily offline.Emergency services, including 911, continue to operate normally, but online payments are currently unavailable, and some public services may be delayed.St. Paul officials say no late fees will be assessed while online payment systems are down. Recreation centers and libraries remain open, though some services at those facilities may also be impacted.Under the governor’s order, the Adjutant General is authorized to deploy necessary personnel, equipment, and resources, and to procure goods and services to support the mission. The state’s general fund will cover costs associated with the emergency response.The order remains in effect until the emergency conditions subside or it is rescinded.Residents with non-emergency concerns can call 651-291-1111.
