Michigan State Police Sgt. Charged with Murder Retires Amid Pending Trial for Kentwood Man's Death
A Michigan State Police detective, identified as Sgt. Brian Keely, is retiring following his second-degree murder and involuntary manslaughter charges in the death of a Kentwood man, as reported by WZZM 13. The charges stem from an April 17 incident in which Keely, driving an unmarked police vehicle, struck 25-year-old Samuel Sterling during a police pursuit. Sterling later died from his injuries in a hospital.
Marc Curtis, the attorney representing Keely, argues that the accident could have been avoided "had Mr. Sterling simply turned himself in" or complied with detective commands, according to statements obtained by WZZM 13. WZZM 13 also quotes Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel saying that Keely's actions were "legally, grossly negligent" and created a high-risk situation that could have been prevented.
Keely, who was part of the MSP's Sixth District Fugitive Task Force, has retired days after the charges as confirmed by Michigan State Police Lt. Michelle Robinson, noted in a report by News Channel 3. The pursuit and eventual fatality occurred after Sterling ran from police when they attempted to arrest him on outstanding warrants. The chase led to a collision in a Burger King parking lot.
In a statement by civil rights attorney Ben Crump, representing Sterling's family, he said, "These charges should serve as a stark warning to law enforcement that their actions have consequences," according to WZZM 13. Meanwhile, bodycam footage of the incident released on May 10 has left the family "stunned and appalled," as conveyed by attorney Ven Johnson on behalf of the Sterling family during an interview covered by CBS Detroit and posted by hoodline. Governor Gretchen Whitmer called the death "unacceptable" and emphasized her trust in AG Nessel's office to make a prompt and fair decision regarding potential criminal charges.
Keely, who has had no prior at-fault accidents while on duty, now faces a potential life sentence on the murder charge and up to 15 years on the manslaughter charge if convicted. His arraignment is scheduled to take place on June 5 at the 62nd District Court in Kentwood, as shared by the sources.
