SMU hosting 4-star TCU QB commit Ty Hawkins for official visit
SMU is continuing to turn up the heat on TCU quarterback pledge Ty Hawkins and will now host him for an official visit that begins Monday evening, sources told On3. There’s been a lot of change on the Hilltop since the staff initially offered Hawkins.
There’s a new quarterbacks coach in D’Eriq King, who hasn’t stopped recruiting Hawkins. The Mustangs waited for a decision from Top 100 quarterback Keelon Russell, who ultimately flipped to Alabama. Now SMU’s getting a chance to make an impression on him.
“Coach Jonathan Brewer, the quarterbacks coach, left and then, they got coach D’Eriq King,” Hawkins told On3. “They’ve stayed in contact with me during this whole process. They want to get me back on campus.”
Rhett Lashlee & Co. offered Hawkins months before the Horned Frogs as he ascended into a Top 100 prospect. SMU’s ready to show off its new facilities, the explosive offense Lashlee directs, strong NIL opportunities and more. Hawkins’ sister ran track at SMU as well.
Hawkins visited SMU numerous times before committing early to TCU. Now in a power conference, the Mustangs have more to offer than earlier in his recruitment. It doesn’t mean the Mustangs can flip him, but Hawkins is ready to listen to SMU’s pitch.
According to On3 national recruiting analyst Chad Simmons, he is also in communication with Oregon. He has talked with Oregon about visiting the last week in July and taking an official visit during the season.
The 6-foot, 195-pound gunslinger landed an invitation to the Elite 11 Finals, which is held later this summer in Los Angeles. There are few higher honors for high school quarterbacks than being invited to the Elite 11 Finals. The event, which will celebrate its 25th year in 2024, brings together the country’s elite signal-callers for three days of competition and training.
On3 ranks Hawkins higher than other recruiting services. He checks in at No. 87 overall, No. 9 signal caller and No. 18 in the Lone Star State, according to the 2025 On300.
“TCU commit Ty Hawkins (No. 88) brings a well-rounded combination of passing polish and rushing ability to the table,” On3 director of rankings and scouting Charles Power wrote in April. “Hawkins was the most productive rusher among top quarterbacks as a junior, as the lone On300 signal caller to eclipse 1,000 yards on the ground. He’s looked good this offseason as a passer and has been a standout on the 7-on-7 circuit, recently earning On3 MVP honors at Overtime’s OT7 Dallas regional.”
He is the No. 149 overall prospect and No. 12 QB in the 2025 cycle, according to the On3 Industry Ranking, a weighted average that utilizes all four major recruiting media companies. He’s also the No. 27 player in Texas.
