Deion Sanders on coaching his sons at Colorado: ‘I’m not Dad, I’m Coach’
College sports have provided us with multiple father-son duos throughout the years. Deion Sanders finds himself in a unique situation, though, having two sons on the team. Shedeur Sanders is the Colorado starting quarterback while Shilo Sanders plays a huge role in the secondary.
Finding a balance between father and coach can be difficult but one Sanders claims to have down. He explained the process of playing both roles ahead of Thursday’s opener against North Dakota State. The moment Colorado takes the field, Coach Prime comes out. At any other time, he is the father to Shedeur and Shilo.

“Well, I’m not a Dad on the field,” Sanders said when speaking with ESPN. “I’m a coach on the field. I just happen to have a couple of sons on the team. When we step inside these white lines, on this green grass, I’m not Dad. I’m Coach. And they know that’s how I come at them. That’s how we prepare as a coach, not a father. Now, when we get off the field, and we get in the locker room, I turn into Dad there.”
At times, Sanders has even claimed to be a father figure for Travis Hunter. The cornerback/wide receiver shocked the college football world by committing to Jackson State out of high school before following Sanders to Boulder. The relationship is clearly a special one with a lot of trust.

Sanders is hoping by this time next season, the trio will be playing in the NFL — potentially a moment where he can be a proud father and coach.
For now, all focus is on performing well on the 2024 season and getting Colorado to the level Sanders expects to be at. North Dakota State is the first test in front of them, a game where plenty of people have put the Buffaloes on upset alert.
Sanders will have to put on his coaching hat for at least the next 60 minutes. In the same interview, he explained what his honest expectations of Shedeur were heading into the season. No matter the result on Thursday night, the father figure side will eventually come out of Sanders, giving advice to his quarterback, safety, and most importantly — his two sons.
