Pro-Palestinian Protesters Block Chevron Headquarters: Reports
SAN RAMON, CA — About 50 pro-Palestinian protesters blocked the entrance to Chevron’s corporate offices in San Ramon Wednesday morning during its annual shareholders meeting, according to numerous reports. The group, known as the Oil and Gas Action Network, was protesting the oil company’s holdings in Israeli-occupied Palestinian territories, and encouraging customers to boycott Chevron until it divests. Chevron owns a 25% stake in a large gas field in the Mediterranean Sea that provides about 70% of Israel’s energy, and Israel has made billions of dollars exporting surplus natural gas produced by Chevron, according to the Chevron website. In February, Chevron also approved a $24 million investment to bolster capacity, according to The Times of Israel.“Chevron is literally fueling the genocide being waged against Palestinians," Oil and Gas Action Network Director Matt Leonard said in a news release shared with NBC Bay Area. "We are protesting at their global headquarters during their annual shareholder meeting in support of the growing call to Boycott Chevron for their legacy of human rights and climate abuses in Palestine, and around the world." The protesters held signs reading “Chevron out of Palestine” and “Chevron stop fueling genocide in Gaza,” and chanted to the beat of about 10 drummers, according to a Bay Area News Group report. Many were chained together to oil drums. Still, most shareholders attended virtually, so the meeting was able to continue, according to KQED. The protest continued until around 9 p.m. Wednesday. “Chevron respects the rights of people to express their views peacefully and lawfully, and we expect a similar level of respect for our employees,” Chevron said in a statement shared with KQED.RELATED:Pro-Palestinian Protesters Rally Outside Of Tesla Factory In FremontProtesters Arrested After Shutting Down Golden Gate BridgePolice Arrest Palestinian Protesters Who Occupied UC Berkeley BuildingThe article Pro-Palestinian Protesters Block Chevron Headquarters: Reports appeared first on San Ramon, CA Patch.
