Pop-Up Boutique Showcases Work Of Longtime Reston Artist Nasser Ovissi
RESTON, VA — On Saturday, The Ovissi Foundation will be opening a pop-up concept called the Ovissi Boutique, at the former home of Lou Lou at 11955 Freedom Drive. in Reston Town Center.For a limited time, visitors will be able to purchase the work of 90-year-old Nasser Ovissi, who has lived in Reston for more that 40 years.The Ovissi Boutique will be open from 1-3 p.m., on Sunday, Oct. 20. After that, the pop-up's hours will be Monday-Sunday, 11 a.m.-7 p.m., through Nov. 17.Patch reached out to Maryam Ovissi about her father's work and what visitors can expect to find when they visit the boutique.Patch: Tell me a little bit about the popup?Maryam Ovissi: The Ovissi Boutique is a concept store that features the work of Nasser Ovissi, a living legend of modern art and one of the founding artists of the Saqqakhaneh movement of the 1950/60s in Iran (pre-revolution). Percentage of sales are donated to the Ovissi Foundation, which gives awards and support to Iranian heritage artists pursuing MFAs as well as Artistic Program Grants.The Ovissi Boutique is also working in partnership with Exhibit9, Sarah Barzmehri, local artist, curator and jewelry maker, as well as ERAN Craft Gallery from Toronto, Canada, featuring handmade work and home decorative objects by Iranian artist. Upon entering the Ovissi Boutique (former Lou Lou space) visitors will discover never seen prints and original works on paper by Nasser Ovissi, along with his original design of silk scarves, men’s neck times, jewelry (cufflinks and pins) along with the infamous replica of the Cyrus Cylinder, that has been gifted from the Dalai Lama to numerous U.S. Presidents and world leaders. Ovissi’s whimsical ceramics and original designs are all available for sale. What is the price range? The mission of the store is to make handmade objects of beauty accessible and affordable. We hope that when people are looking for unique gifts they will start to think about the Ovissi Boutique and the work of Nasser Ovissi.Why are you doing this as a pop-up and not something longer term? We are doing this pop-up to celebrate the legacy of Nasser Ovissi who has been living in Reston for more than 40 years and just turned 90! Nasser Ovissi has lived in Reston for over 40 years and now lives with his daughter, Maryam Ovissi, in the heart of Reston. Mr. Ovissi opened up a store in the 1980s at Lake Anne and has maintained his private studio and home gallery in Reston since the early 1980s. Prior to the Iranian Revolution of 1979, Ovissi was the Cultural Attaché in the Iranian Embassy of Rome and Madrid. Ovissi obtained his first major artistic award in his early twenties and his work was the first art work purchased by the last Empress of Iran Farah Pahlavi in the development of one of the most important collections of Modern art in the world, currently at the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art. He has been called a “Messenger of Joy” blending in his work three iconic symbols; the horse, woman and pomegranate. His artistic trinity and mastery of color has made him a living legend.
