Weeks after he died unexpectedly at the age of 59, Line of Duty star Brian McCardie’s cause of death has been revealed.
The actor played mafia boss John Thomas ‘Tommy’ Hunter in the hit series, starring alongside the likes of Vicky McClure and Martin Compston.
His death was first announced on April 30, with his sister writing in a statement that he died two days earlier.
Now, Sarah has released a further message, thanking fans for their support.
She also shared that the Scottish star’s funeral will be held on Thursday (May 23), where his loved ones will say a final goodbye.
‘Hi all, the McCardie family would like to thank everyone for their overwhelming support regarding the sudden passing of Brian James McCardie, beloved son, brother, uncle and friend,’ she began.

‘Brian died due to an aortic dissection, causing short pain and a sudden death.’
As per the NHS, aortic dissection is a rare and deadly condition where the weakened wall of the aorta tears.
Sarah added: ‘There will be a funeral mass held on Thursday 23rd May at 11.30am at St Mary’s Church, 70 Bannatyne Street, Lanark. We then move on at 1.30pm to Holytown Crematorium, Memorial Way, Holytown, Motherwell, where we will celebrate Brian’s life before he takes his final bow.
‘There will be links available to both the mass and the cremation service for those who cannot attend in person. We will feel your support from afar.’
Her message concluded: ‘With love and thanks, The McCardie family, Eddie, Moira, Martin, Ed, Liz and Sarah. Xxx.’
When she first announced her brother’s death, Sarah’s statement read: ‘It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Brian James McCardie, beloved son, brother, uncle and dear friend to so many.

‘Brian passed away suddenly at home on Sunday 28th April. A wonderful and passionate actor on stage and screen, Brian loved his work and touched many lives, and is gone much too soon.
‘We love him and will miss him greatly; please remember Brian in your thoughts.’
Tributes quickly flooded the internet in McCardie’s honour, with the official X account for Line of Duty writing: ‘We are deeply saddened to hear of Brian McCardie’s death.
‘We are honoured to have worked with Brian on Line of Duty. He was incredibly talented and the lasting impact he had as Tommy Hunter is testament to the power of his performance.
‘Our thoughts are with his loved ones.’

As well as his starring role in BBC crime drama Line of Duty, McCardia also appeared in an episode of Outlander as Sir Marcus MacRannoch.
His other acting credits included film appearances in Irvine Welsh’s Filth, and the thriller Low Winter Sun alongside Mark Strong.
He starred opposite Sean Bean in the 2021 BBC prison drama Time, too.
Before his death, McCardie joined the cast of the Outlander prequel, Blood of My Blood.
