Despite excellent start by Julio Teheran, Tides see losing streak reach five
The Norfolk Tides are skidding toward the International League first half’s conclusion.
Their bullpen let another lead get away Friday night, and their losing streak reached five games with a 7-3 defeat to Lehigh Valley before 9,005 at Coca-Cola Park in Allentown, Pennsylvania.
The IronPigs erased a 3-1 deficit with a six-run eighth inning, denying veteran starter Julio Teheran a victory.
Norfolk (35-38) and Lehigh Valley (33-38) will play the fifth of their six-game series Saturday night.
Coby Mayo, who recently came off the injured list, was a bright spot offensively for the Tides. He was 3 for 4 with an RBI double in the first inning and a solo home run in the fifth.
Connor Pavolony singled home Hudson Haskin in the sixth, putting Norfolk ahead 3-0.
Nick Podkul began the Philadelphia farm club’s comeback with a solo home run in the sixth. That was a rare blemish for Teheran, who gave up four hits and two walks in six innings, striking out three.
In the eighth, the game unraveled on relievers Wandisson Charles (1-5) and Matt Krook. Weston Wilson hit an RBI single, and the IronPigs pulled even when Ruben Cardenas was plunked by a Krook pitch with the bases loaded.
A throwing error by Mayo on Jim Haley’s grounder to third enabled two runs to score. Cal Stevenson completed the decisive uprising by ripping a two-run double to center field.
IronPigs reliever Andrew Bellatti (2-0) pitched a scoreless eighth for the victory, and Max Lazar worked a 1-2-3 ninth for the save.
