Thomas Tuchel overtakes Gareth Southgate as favourite to be next Man Utd boss as Erik ten Hag’s now ODDS ON to be sacked
THOMAS TUCHEL is the bookies’ favourite to be the next Manchester United manager.
The German – set to be available in the summer – has recently replaced Gareth Southgate as the frontrunner in the betting to take over from Erik ten Hag.
Erik ten Hag looks set to be replaced in the summer
Thomas Tuchel is the bookies’ favourite to replace him
That follows another disastrous night for the Dutchman in the United dugout after a humiliating 4-0 drubbing at the hands of Crystal Palace.
There’s a strong possibility United won’t get ANY European football next season, which is almost unforgivable given their position just a month or so ago.
It’s the latest in a catalogue of events that have forced bookmakers to price Ten Hag as ODDS ON to be sacked in the summer with the new owners tasked with finding his replacement.
We look at the two candidates seemingly strongly in contention with the bookmakers.
Thomas Tuchel
Current role: Bayern Munich boss
Odds for Man Utd job: 5/2
Tuchel has attracted most of the money in recent days and Paddy Power have reacted, making him a clear favourite.
He lost out comfortably in the Bundesliga race and as a result, informed Bayern he would be quitting at the end of the season.
That was back in February and he’s since guided Munich to within 90 minutes of a spot in the Champions League final, with some fans petitioning for him to stay on.
Ten Hag and Tuchel could be set for a job swap
But he’s said to be unfazed by that and his plan remains to quit the Allianz Arena come the end of the season.
Reports in Germany suggest informal conversations have been held regarding a switch in the summer.
Has Premier League experience having coached Chelsea, guiding them to European glory too. Won 63 of his 100 games in charge of the club.
Also played United twice earlier in the season, winning both home and away in Champions League group stage fixtures.
Ironically, Ten Hag tipped to replace him as Bayern boss.
Gareth Southgate
Current role: England manager
Odds for Man Utd job: 9/2
Southgate’s name was thrown into the mix earlier on this year and he’s remained strong in the betting markets since.
The England boss was reportedly the number one choice of Sir Jim Ratcliffe during his takeover process, with new technical director Jason Wilcox also a fan.
Southgate’s potential appointment is said to be universally welcome by those in the club, including the United players.
Gareth Southgate is a strong contender and is universally backed by United hierarchy
His contract with the FA runs out in December of this year, meaning this summer’s Euros could be his last in charge – after shelving talks on his future until after the tournament.
Regardless of the outcome, he could look to leave on a high should England finally get over the line, or admit defeat and hand the reins to someone else should they disappoint on the continental stage yet again.
Either way, he could be looking for a fresh challenge after the summer and Old Trafford could present itself nicely.
He’s also worked with incoming sporting director Dan Ashworth at the FA, which also sways things in his favour.
Other Man Utd next manager contenders
Prior to Gareth Southgate’s inclusion at the forefront of the betting markets, it was GRAHAM POTTER (5/1) who dominated this particular market in the early parts of the season.
Potter, who also has previous of working with Dan Ashworth at Brighton, has remained out of work since his sacking from Chelsea at the beginning of last year though has been linked with several top flight roles.
Next Man Utd manager odds
Paddy Power prices
Thomas Tuchel 5/2
Gareth Southgate 9/2
Graham Potter 5/1
Julian Nagelsmann 9/1
Roberto De Zerbi 11/1
Ruben Amorim 11/1
Has met owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe and no surprises should his odds be shortened still.
JULIAN NAGELSMANN (9/1) is reportedly ‘of increasing interest’ to the United board.
The German national team boss worked wonders at Hoffenheim before an equally impressive stint in charge at Bayern. Still only 36 and could be tempted with a move back to club football after guiding Germans in home Euros this summer.
Much has been said about Brighton’s style of play and it’ll be hard for them to keep hold of ROBERTO DE ZERBI (11/1) beyond the summer.
He’s found it tough balancing Europe and the league with this squad but they could move a place below United should they win their game in hand.
He’s the same odds as RUBEN AMORIM (11/1), who certainly appeared set to be well in the frame for the Liverpool job before that broke down.
Also met with West Ham so clear he wants a move from Sporting and United could turn attentions to him if failing to land a top target.
