Who Is Joseph Fahnbulleh? Track Star Shocked Multiple Countries at 2024 World Athletics Relays
Joseph Fahnbulleh is a Liberian-American Olympic sprinter and a 2x NCAA champion who made an impressive performance at the 2024 World Athletics Bahamas Relays. Fahnbulleh has been a star in the making since his collegiate days as part of the Florida Gators, and he recently showed his prowess on the world stage.
The audience at Thomas Robinson Stadium was witness to history being made as Fahnbulleh stole a spot for the Liberian team in the Paris Olympics in August. He dominated the relay race with a display of sheer speed and helped Liberia take over several other countries that were in the running for the Olympics.
Fahnbulleh makes Liberian history after qualifying for Paris Olympics
Recently, in the men’s 4x100m relay, Fahnbulleh anchored the Liberian team to a second-place finish with a time of 38.65 seconds, according to the World Athletics’ official website. This was a new national record for Liberia. Despite the country’s first three legs – Emmanuel Matadi, Jabez Reeves, and Akeem Sirleaf – lagging in speed, Fahnbulleh surged from behind to secure the Olympic qualification spot. His impressive anchor leg, where he made up ground on the leaders, left fans in awe, with one describing his speed as “dangerous.” As per the World Athletics, Liberia’s finishing time was just 0.005 seconds faster than Switzerland, who finished third.
Moreover in the finals, Fahnbulleh finished in fifth place with a time of 19.98 seconds. This is the first time Liberia has qualified for the Olympics relay since the Sydney 2000 Games. In 2022, Joseph Fahnbulleh won two NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championship titles in both the 100m and 200m events. They had respective times of 10.00s and 19.83s.
In the past, he’s also placed fourth at the World Athletics Championships in the 200m with a time of 19.84 seconds in the final. Additionally, Fahnbulleh competed in the 200 meters at the World Athletics Championship in Budapest last year, qualifying for the semi-finals for his third consecutive final. The Minnesota native is expected to showcase his talent at the Paris Olympics 2024.
Joseph Fahnbulleh’s road to Paris
Last year, at the Tom Jones Memorial meet, Joseph Fahnbulleh competed against Noah Lyles in the men’s 100m event. Lyles won the final with a time of 9.95 seconds, with Fahnbulleh coming in second at 9.98 seconds. This year, Team USA showcased its relay dominance in the Bahamas, winning four out of five finals. Noah Lyles contributed to their victories in the respective 4x100m races.
Despite the dominance of the USA, Liberia’s remarkable victory in the men’s 4×100 repechage heat, led by Joseph Fahnbulleh, stood out. Their time of 38.65 seconds set a new Liberian national record. Fahnbulleh’s performance last year matched his new Liberian record, despite a slow start. He’s now focused on the Paris Games 2024, aiming for a podium finish. Will he emerge victorious? Only time will tell!
