ODU linebacker Jason Henderson picks up two more preseason honors
COLLEGE FOOTBALL
Old Dominion linebacker Jason Henderson collected two more preseason honors Tuesday.
The senior from Dingmans Ferry, Pennsylvania, has made the preseason watch list for the Butkus Award, which recognizes the nation’s best linebacker. He also earned preseason first-team All-America honors by the Sporting News.
On Monday, Henderson made the Chuck Bednarik Award watch list. That honors the best defensive player in the country.
Henderson led the country in tackles per game with 14.2 last season and finished with 170 total in 12 games. Last year’s tackle leader, Iowa linebacker Jay Higgins, had 171 in 14 games. Henderson also had 19.5 tackles for loss, which ranked fourth in the nation.
Also making the Butkus Award list were Virginia Tech’s Sam Brumfield and James Madison’s Jacob Dobbs.
Brumfield (5-11, 225) joined the Hokies in the spring after spending the 2023 season at Middle Tennessee State. He had 81 tackles, including 6.5 for loss, and 3.5 sacks last season.
Dobbs, a transfer from Holy Cross, had 122 tackles and five sacks last season.
NSU, HU stars on Black College list
Norfolk State quarterback Otto Kuhns and Hampton University running back Elijah Burris have made the watch list for the Black College Football Player of the Year Award.
Virginia Union defensive lineman Isaac Anderson and running back Jada Byers also made the list.
Kuhns passed for 1,244 yards and 12 touchdowns and rushed for 254 yards and three scores for the Spartans last season.
Burris led the Pirates with 803 rushing yards despite playing in only seven games and added six touchdowns.
GOLF
UVA duo move on at U.S. Amateur
University of Virginia golfers Paul Chang and Ben James advanced to the match play portion —and Virginia Beach’s Evan Beck was in contention to join them — at the U.S. Amateur Championship on Tuesday at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Chaska, Minnesota.
Chang was tied for third in stroke play at 7 under par, while James was tied for 11th at 4 under with players still on the course. Beck — who went to Norfolk Academy and Wake Forest — was tied for 55th at even par with two holes to play, but had a bogey on his 17th hole to drop to 66th and below the cut line. He shot a 66 in the first round of stroke play Monday.
The top 64 players move on to match play, which is set to begin Wednesday. The tournament runs through Sunday.
