A fan favorite as a player a decade ago, Jorge Gutierrez returns to the Nets organization as an assistant coach for the Long Island Nets. Gutierrez who played 25 games with Brooklyn in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons — and spent and two years playing under Jordi Fernandez with the Canton Charge — was one of three assistants named by Long Island head coach Mfon Udofia. The other two are Tevin Baskin, the coach and Director Of Scouting & Analytics at Mississippi State, and Fortune Solomon who served as an assistant coach for the South Sudanese basketball team at the Paris Olympics. Shawn Swords, a veteran Canadian coach, will return for his second year as associate head coach.
The 35-year-old Gutierrez finished his 14-year professional career this past season in Mexico with Apaches de Chihuahua. In addition to playing for Nets, Milwaukee Bucks and Charlotte Hornets, Gutierrez spent time in the G League, where he was All-G League and All-Defensive Team with the Canton Charge and Fernandez. He played as well for teams in Mexico, Turkey, Greece, Germany, Italy and Spain. He was MVP of the Mexican league in 2022.
He was first signed by Nets to a 10-day contract on March 6, 2014. Three days ago, he made his NBA debut, becoming the fourth Mexican to play in the NBA. On March 17, he signed a second 10-day contract with the Nets.
On March 28, 2014, Gutierrez signed a multi-year deal with the Nets.
At the time, head coach Jason Kidd called the newest Net —and fellow Cal product—”awesome.”
“He’s been great,” coach Kidd said. “Tough kid … sprained his ankle and kept playing, he knocked down shots. … For the 20 days he’s been here, he’s been awesome.
His NBA career high — 10 points, along with 3 rebounds, 1 assist and 1 block — was with the Nets that same week.
Then, early the next season, on December 11, 2014, Gutiérrez was traded, along with Andrei Kirilenko, the Nets’ second round draft pick in 2020 plus the right to swap second round picks in 2018, to the Philadelphia 76ers in exchange for Brandon Davies. Nets GM at the time, Billy King, thought he had a handshake deal with then Sixers GM Sam Hinkie that Philly would keep Gutierrez on his roster but he didn’t.
Gutierrez wound up with Cleveland Charge under Fernandez. Long Island opens its season the second week of November.
