Andrew Garfield says he and Florence Pugh didn't hear 'cut' while filming “We Live in Time” sex scene: 'We’ll just carry on'
"At a certain point, both of us, we’re both kind of telepathically saying to each other, 'This definitely feels like a longer take.'"

Future filmmakers, take note: Andrew Garfield is sharing why it's important to yell “cut!” During a recent appearance at New York City’s 92nd Street Y on Friday, the actor recalled an instance in which he and his We Live in Time costar Florence Pugh were filming a “very intimate, passionate sex scene” together and had to keep the onscreen chemistry alive for an extended period of time because they never heard anyone call cut.“The scene becomes passionate, as we choreographed it,” Garfield explained in video footage from the event posted on social media. “And we get into it as it were, and we go a little bit further than we were meant to because we never heard ‘cut’ and it’s feeling safe. And we’re just kinda like, ‘Ok, we’ll just go into the next thing, we’ll let this progress, and we’ll just carry on.’”Sign up for Entertainment Weekly's free daily newsletter to get breaking TV news, exclusive first looks, recaps, reviews, interviews with your favorite stars, and more.

Garfield noted earlier in his story that the scene, which takes place in their characters' shared countryside home, was filmed on a closed set with only the film’s Director of Photography, Stuart Bentley, and a boom operator in the room with them. However, as they continued to act out the scene, Garfield and Pugh both slowly came to the realization that the spicy segment had been going on for quite some time. He added, “And at a certain point, both of us, we’re both kind of telepathically saying to each other, ‘This definitely feels like a longer take.’”Garfield then acted out for the crowd what he saw when he eventually took a gander at what was happening outside of the scene. “I look up, and in the corner is Stuart and our boom operator,” he said, before turning his back to the crowd. "Stuart has the camera by his side and he’s turned into the wall.”

Directed by John Crowley (Brooklyn), We Live in Time follows the relationship between Tobias (Garfield) and Almut (Pugh) as they navigate their careers, family, and her cancer diagnosis. Their romance is told in non-chronological order, instead preferring to bounce between memorable moments within their ever-evolving connection."Every scene in a movie is specifically there for a reason, but when it's jumping around like this, every single snapshot that you're seeing in their life is a core memory," Pugh previously told Entertainment Weekly. "It's the main event of what is going on. In that sense, I felt there was a reason for every single scene as to how it then made the rest of those eras within the 10 years fold into each other. It gave me a bit more attention to detail in every single moment."We Live in Time hits theaters in a limited release on Oct. 11 and nationwide on Oct. 18.
