UTHealth Houston School of Public Health Launches State-of-the-Art Facility in Downtown Austin

Amidst the healthcare and medical sector expansion in Downtown Austin, the UTHealth Houston School of Public Health unveiled its grand opening for a new building designed to serve as a beacon of research, education, and collaboration. According to KVUE, the new facility spans nearly 65,000 square feet and stands nine stories tall, strategically situated near Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium, it boasts research labs and encompasses programs such as epidemiology and health promotion and behavioral sciences, aiming to bolster families and young children's well-being.
"The biggest benefit for the community, from a research perspective and community service perspective, has to do with child health," Steven Kelder told KVUE, highlighting the institution's dedication to training students in a building designed to be inviting and conducive to learning. The burgeoning district is not only home to this latest educational edifice but also to the Dell Medical School and Dell Medical Center, with plans to further transform the area into an MD Anderson Cancer Center facility.
In parallel, a press release from Newswise detailed the design ethos behind the $20.4 million buildout, highlighting its features like the flexible meeting spaces, simulation labs, and a teaching kitchen, intending to foster an inclusive, safe, flexible, and environmentally conscious educational environment by using carbon-neutral carpets, Forest Stewardship Council-certified wood for ceilings, and floor-to-ceiling windows to harness natural light and minimize the need for artificial illumination, and every room was meticulously designed for learning, using various colors and textures to promote a visually engaging learning environment, which reflects the collaborative nature of work at the School of Public Health.
Deanna Hoelscher, PhD, regional dean of the School, expounded upon the institution’s drive to promote health in the Austin and Central Texas community, "The new building allows us to reach out and do the type of work that we do best - promoting health in the Austin and Central Texas community," she acknowledged the support of UTHealth Houston in this endeavor. Accessibility considerations were taken into account with the building’s placement along public transit lines and adjacence to front-access bike lanes, ensuring easy access for students and faculty, and the top floor opens up to an outdoor space, offering a space for reflection and fresh air, per Newswise release.
