NFL insider: Cowboys, Dak Prescott ‘trying to huddle up’ on new contract, but ‘there’s a gap’
As the Cowboys make their final preparations for Sunday’s season opener against the Browns, the big question mark is still about Dak Prescott’s contract situation. The two sides have been working toward a new deal throughout the offseason as he looks at potential free agency after this year.
Just two days before kickoff, ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler shared a new update on where things stand. It sounds like both the Cowboys and Prescott will continue to work toward an agreement – but “there’s a gap.”

Prescott previously said his agent Todd France was “working” on an extension with the Cowboys with the season quickly approaching. Fowler confirmed the two sides want to get something done, but they have to figure out the “gap” before making it happen.
“I just checked in on this. Here’s where we stand,” Fowler said on SportsCenter Friday evening. “Somebody in Dallas told me they are working away at this thing, that they are trying to huddle up, put together an offer that can get Dak Prescott to the finish line. But, checking with both sides, there’s a gap here. They’re trying to navigate that gap.

“And Dak Prescott’s not afraid of free agency. He’s pretty much made that clear. So if it comes to that, he’d like to be a Cowboy, but he’ll embrace that if he has to go to the open market, where he would make a killing. Dallas knows that, and they know that’s why this is a hard deal to do. But they are going to try over the next few days.”
Prescott signed his current contract – worth four years and $160 million – ahead of the 2021 season, meaning he’s looking at free agency after this season if he and the Cowboys don’t agree on a new deal. He set a new career-high for completions last season as he threw for 4,516 yards – his most since 2019 – and an NFL-leading 36 touchdowns in 2023.
Speaking with reporters on Thursday, Prescott updated where things stand. He said France and Stephen Jones were “working,” but he didn’t want to put a timeline on it. But with the season opener lurking on Sunday, time could be ticking.
“I would say that they’re working,” Prescott said, via Calvin Watkins of the Dallas Morning News. “I don’t know if that’s necessarily the timeline. I can’t say, oh, hell I’ll put a timeline on to Todd (France) and Stephen (Jones) if we don’t get this done, this or that. But I know they’re working.”
