NFL insider speculates future Dak Prescott deal would come at ‘unbelievable cost’ for Cowboys
Ahead of the regular season, the biggest story surrounding the Dallas Cowboys is the contract situation of Dak Prescott. For now, he will go into the opener against Cleveland playing on the final year of his deal. If no agreement is reached ahead of Sept. 8, Prescott might find himself a free agent next offseason.
If Dallas is able to keep Prescott around the for foreseeable future, it’s going to be at an “unbelievable cost” according to Ian Rapoport of the NFL Network. Now, this was speculation from the NFL insider but in his opinion, the Cowboys might not have enough to pull off what could be a rather large contract.

“Here is what I would imagine, based on my knowledge, not reporting, just based on what I gather and what I know If they don’t do a deal by then [the start of the regular season], I can’t imagine he’s looking at a deal through the season. I can’t imagine he’s looking at a deal until March,” Rapoport said Thursday.
“Then we’re talking free agency. And, as we’ve said many times, he’ll be the highest-profile free agent in NFL history. They could do a deal, but it has to come at an unbelievable cost, and I just don’t know if the Cowboys are going to get where they need to get.”

Rapoport has reported on what Prescott could get on an annual basis in the past, saying $60 million is “not crazy.” This would make him the highest-paid quarterback in the NFL on an annual basis. The likes of Joe Burrow, Jordan Love, and Trevor Lawrence currently sit at $55 million per year.
“Wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a little bit of a shorter deal,” Rapoport said on Prescott back in early July. “I know the fact that people have mentioned the number 60, as in $60 million per year. The fact that it’s not crazy is based on where he is, what the numbers are, the type of leverage he has. This could be the kind of contract we’re talking about.”
There are just 10 days remaining until the game in Cleveland. Jerry Jones and the Cowboys were able to get the Lamb contract over the line and it appears Spet. 8 may be the deadline to get Prescott finished.
