Beth Cordingly reveals moments she went off script that left Emmerdale cast gasping in shock

Ruby Fox-Miligan (Beth Cordingly) has made a huge impression since arriving in Emmerdale – on viewers and villagers alike.
Feisty, brash Ruby isn’t afraid of speaking her mind, especially when she has a few glasses of wine inside her, and her savage put-downs and witty one-liners mean she’s huge fun to watch.
‘In my head I always think she’s a bit like Gloria in Modern Family,’ Beth Cordingly told us, referring to the lovable and loud character portrayed by Sofia Vergara in the comedy series.
‘It’s one of the things in my head for that kind of impulsive action,’ Beth added. ‘She’s so different to me in the way that I would react to things, but you always have to find justification and the logic of the character.’

Beth told us she loves playing the character and it takes her back to another role she played when Ruby reveals her ‘teenage’ side.
‘I remember when I played Sara in Family Affairs, this Channel 5 soap years and years ago, she was this tearaway teenager who was very badly behaved and I remember thinking, “I’m just going to have to show the side of me that only my mum sees – that kind of [screeches] side of you”. And I have to do that with Ruby as well sometimes. It’s always fun to play those kind of parts.’
Sometimes Ruby’s behaviour can go a bit too far, such as when she accidentally elbowed Chas (Lucy Pargeter) – who was recovering from a mastectomy – in the chest. The actress old us that her real life family get a bit concerned by these scenes.

‘My dad got very worried at the beginning about, “She’s so awful! You’re going to get trolled!”’ she revealed. ‘Then it went all around the family about being trolled and a friend of a member of my family rang and said, “We hear you’re being trolled!” It’s all my dad worrying about it. They like seeing the explosive drama but they do get a bit worried about her behaviour.’
On a couple of occasions Ruby has enraged the villagers even more by mimicking their northern – or Scottish in the case of Moira (Natalie J. Robb) – accents and this is something Beth came up with herself.
‘It’s not in the scripts,’ she confirmed.

‘When I did it the first time around the dinner table the reaction of everyone was like [gasps]. I kind of wish I’d waited for the take. In the scene before I dd someone else’s accent, Moira’s, and I wished I’d held on it for the take because the reaction was [loud gasp]. Everyone looked outraged! And then of course you do it for the second or third time. Everyone said, “That’s the way to annoy northerners even more!”’
Beth used her fake northern accent to devastatingly funny effect in an episode in April when she was trying to reunite Cain (Jeff Hordley) and Caleb (William Ash) after yet another disagreement.

She chose to do it via the medium of karaoke and her drunken version of He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother sung in a heavy ‘Yorkshire’ accent had her co-stars struggling to keep a straight face and generally failing.
Beth said that she knows that fans either love or hate Ruby, and she has a certain sympathy with people who are horrified by her behaviour.
‘Sometimes I think, “Oh, that’s a bit mean,” but then I think, “No, that’s what I thought when I read the script. What a nightmare!”’
