East Providence prepares for traffic as students head back to school

EAST PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WPRI) — As students across East Providence return to the classroom this week, the city is outlining plans to alleviate traffic during the school year.
East Providence City Council President Bob Rodericks acknowledged potential traffic challenges, especially in the wake of last December's Washington Bridge debacle.
Kent Heights Elementary, located on Pawtucket Avenue, is particularly affected, as the road is known to experience heavy congestion.

To help ease the situation, Rodericks told 12 News the city is working to expand parking at several schools.
One potential solution involves acquiring a vacant parking lot at the now-closed Benny’s on Pawtucket Avenue.
"We're in negotiations with the current owner to purchase the lot at a reasonable price, get it paved, and hopefully get some of these cars off the street," Rodericks said.
Rodericks also highlighted the ongoing post-pandemic bus driver shortage and the increasing number of parents driving their children to school, both of which have contributed to the congestion.

"More parents bring their kids to school now than ever before. So even without the bridge, that's an issue," he said.
While East Providence Police reported no significant traffic issues on the first day of school, Rodericks cautioned that delays are expected.
"Even though we've had a smooth opening today by all accounts, I know there are people that will say 'But I had a delay and my kid's bus was late.'" Rodericks said. "Have some patience. That's going to happen and we just need staff."
