This Week in Explainers: How race for US president between Kamala Harris, Donald Trump remains on knife edge
While Kamala Harris clearly has the advantage in national polls, there’s nothing to choose between her and Donald Trump when it comes to the swing states.
It’s been another tumultuous week in the world.
Israel’s bombing of Lebanon intensified this past week – even as Lebanese politicians accused Israel of committing war crimes. Israel, which has bombed Gaza relentlessly after the October 7 attack, had been trading fire with the Hezbollah militant group for much of the past year.
On Saturday (October 26), Israel hit Iran with airstrikes in retaliation for the Islamic Republic’s missile attacks earlier this month. This has once again raised fear of escalating the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
Meanwhile, the race between Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump remains balanced on a knife’s edge. Polls recently showed a virtual tie between the two candidates in the swing states that will decide the winner of the presidential contest.
Also, the Brics bloc – which originally comprised Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa –all welcomed four new members. The creation of the bloc, which was founded as an informal club in 2009 to provide a platform for its members to challenge a world order dominated by the United States and its Western allies, was initiated by Russia and is now led by Moscow and Beijing.

1. Israel this week made an interesting discovery amid its bombardment of Lebanon. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) claimed to have found a Hezbollah bunker under the Al-Sahel Hospital in Beirut’s suburb of Dahiyeh. Israel has claimed that this bunker was built by the militant group’s former leader, Sayyed Hassan Nasrallah, and contained cash and gold bars worth $500 million (Rs 4,200 crore).
IDF Spokesperson Rear Admiral Daniel Hagari at a press conference said, “The funds stored here could have been used to rebuild Lebanon, but instead they are used to rebuild Hezbollah.” Let’s take a look at what we know about the bunker.
2. As Election Day nears, there’s just one question on people’s minds. Is Trump ahead or is Kamala in the lead in the race for president? The question comes even as people in 36 states have already begun going to the polls. While Kamala clearly has the advantage in national polls, there’s nothing to choose between them when it comes to the swing states. But what do the opinion polls in the battleground states show? And how accurate are these polls given what happened in 2020 and 2016? We tell you all.
3. Brics has grown in size yet again. Though the group is not a formal multilateral organisation like the United Nations, World Bank or the Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC), It nevertheless represents around 3.5 billion people – 45 per cent of the world’s population – and its combined economies are valued at over $28.5 trillion. But which countries have recently joined? And why do dozens of countries want to join in and why? And what does the expansion mean for the West? This piece breaks it down for you.
4. France has a new feminist hero. The ongoing mass rape trial of Gisele Pelicot – the French woman raped by her husband and dozens of other men – has gripped the nation with gruesome details being revealed every day. Pelicot has insisted that the details of the trial be broadcast far and wide rather than kept under wraps. Her insistence that ‘shame must change sides’ from the survivors to the criminals has been praised by politicians and rights groups. Today, the survivor has been hailed as a feminist hero.

Two highly classified intelligence documents detailing Israel’s plan for a retaliatory strike on Iran have been leaked. A possible suspect has already been identified – American-Iranian Ariane Tabatabai, who serves as the Chief of Staff to the Assistant Secretary of Defence for Special Operations.
