Breaking down Michigan State’s spring portal activity after RB Davion Primm commits to Morehead State
Michigan State has begun to finalize its roster for the 2024 football season. This weekend, the Spartans’ remaining high school signees and transfer portal additions will arrive in East Lansing. Meanwhile, several of Michigan State’s outgoing players have found new homes.
Michigan State added 15 players through the transfer portal after spring practice concluded in mid-April. Meanwhile, a whopping 24 Spartan players entered the portal this spring. Of those 24 players, redshirt sophomore wide receiver Antonio Gates Jr. was the only player to withdraw his name from the portal.
Seventeen of the remaining 23 players have found new homes. The most recent commitment came from reserve running back Davion Primm, who committed to FCS program Morehead State on Friday.
Primm was one of four Michigan State running backs to enter the portal this spring. Sixth-year senior Jaren Mangham will play for Minnesota this fall, his final season at the college ranks. Redshirt freshman Jaelon Barbarin and redshirt senior Jalen Berger have yet to announce where they will play football next season.
Other Michigan State players still looking for a home include redshirt junior linebacker Ma’a Gaoteote, redshirt senior defensive back Marqui Lowrey Jr., sophomore defensive back Sean Brown, senior long snapper Drew Wilson – who began his Michigan State career as a walk-on before earning a scholarship – and walk-on redshirt senior quarterback Andrew Schorfhaar.
Nine of the 23 Michigan State players to enter to portal this spring remained at the Power Four level. Three will remain at the Division I FBS level, two will head to the Division I FCS level and one will move down to Division II.
Additionally, no two Michigan State portal departures have transferred to the same school. Four chose to stay in the Big Ten, at Oregon, Indiana, Michigan and Minnesota. Two will head to the Big 12, in Colorado and Kansas. Another two will leave for ACC schools California and Miami. One transferred to perennial SEC contender Alabama.
Meanwhile, Michigan State’s spring portal additions primarily came from Power Four programs as well. 11 of the Spartans’ 15 additions played for a Power Four program last season. Of the four remaining players, three of them played a significant role at a smaller school.
Roster turnover has always been a part of the sport, but it has increased since players were given the opportunity to freely transfer without having to sit out the following season.
However, we’re nearing a time of year where college football starts to become more about the game and less about the transfer portal and coaching changes. Michigan State’s coaches now have about 70 days to familiarize themselves with their new players’ strengths and weaknesses as the team heads into fall camp, with the season opener versus Florida Atlantic right around the corner.
